If/when your DH works nights...

Tomorrow, DH starts a three week project and his hours will be 10pm - 6am.  He normally works 7am-4pm so, this will be a huge change for us and I am not thrilled about sleeping alone for all those weeks.  Though the first few nights having the tv all to myself might not be a terrible thing...lol!

So, what do you do with yourself on nights when your DH works?  Do you cook just for one (or you and kids), or as usual so that there are leftovers for him?

Re: If/when your DH works nights...

  • I try to cook when I am by myself. Sometimes it works out and others it doesn't. It gives me a chance to catch up on things but when it's too long I do feel like we are ships passing. Then we try to talk on the phone more. At least it's only for a certain amount of time. I say enjoy your few weeks of freedom.

  • Because it is just me and no kids, some nights I will cook and leave some for him when he gets home at midnight. Other times, Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, and Smart ones are my friends!!!!

I also LOVEEEEE having the TV all to myself!!! LOL

It is defiantly an adjustment, but once you get into a routine it gets easier.

  • I try cook as usual and make DH a plate. He can then eat it whenever he likes. If it's when he get home or lunch the next day. He feels like he wasn't forgotten then.

  • i'd probably make enough food so he can leftovers during the day. unless he's not interested and will make do with sandwiches and cereal for 3 weeks.

    enjoy your alone tv time!

  • I watch Glee and Say Yes to the Dress and all my other dvr'ed shows. lol.

I don't have conventional hours so the only difference really is that dinner is egg white omelet or cereal rather than a full blown meal.

i do keep every light on in the house until bed time

and we talk when we can or at the very least get that good night call in.

sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.
  • DH has been working nights for ten yrs now so I am used to it. I actually like the time to myself. It was hard when Sam was a baby and I had to take care of all the night wakings by myself and the same will be for this baby. But I usually make a quick dinner for everyone on the nights he works (he leaves the house at 6pm) and then give Sam her bath and spend time w/her til her bedtime. Then I will usually read or watch my tv shows that dh hates.

  • A few nights a week DH works late. I usually cook dinner for the two of us and make a plate for him to warm up when he gets home. Like Migette said, I do love having the TV to myself and watching what ever girly shows I want. When I go to bed, I plug nightlights in everywhere lol.

  • DH has been working midnight until 8:00am for the past year or so. It was definatly a huge adjustment at first but it's really not that bad. Having the bed all to yourself isn't such a bad thing all the time!

Since you have G I would still cook dinner but just make much smaller portions unless your DH like's leftover's. He may be hungry when he gets home in the morning and if you have leftovers in the fridge it will be an easy meal for him to heat himself up. DH always tells me that even though it's 8am, it doesn't feel like 8am to him, and he's looking for dinner when he gets home in the monrning.

  • Jay works til 8pm, doesnt get home til close to 10pm and lots of time is stuck at work later.  I will usually cook and leave leftovers for him to eat whenever he is hungry.  I watch my girly tv, read, catch up with GF's, and do stuff that i just need to catch up on.

That is DH's shift.  We see each other for an hour at night.  I am horrible at cooking except weekends.  This week's goal is to try some crock pot receipes.

We either have take out or he has fast food on the way to work ... or will make something small.  I eat whatever is easy to make but all depends on when DD goes to bed (usually b/w 8&9 but not always)...but i try to eat something small if not leftovers...well, even if it is.  And like Midgette...i will also pop in a smart one or lean cuisine.

I love having the TV to myself and when he has been home b/c of illness or whatever, i've actually not liked it because that is my time LOL

Good point!  DH will eat anything at anytime of the day (cold out of the fridge...eww!) anyway.  So, I'm thinking this will hold true for him as well.

  • DH works very late during tax season so I usually cook for both of us and he eats the leftovers when he gets home.

When DH has to go out of town I sleep with a hammer next to the bed to use as a weapon.  Just makes me feel a little safer.  I also sleep with the bedroom door open so I can hear if anything happens in the house.

  • I felt a bit ridiculous about not wanting to be alone at night until I read some of your responses so, thank you!  Before getting engaged and moving in with DH, I lived alone for 12 years so, you'd think it wouldn't be an issue.  Goes to show just how much things can change in a short period of time!

  • When DH was in military I slept with the dogs every night. To the point when he moved home the DOG kicked him out of bed.  I was so used to it.

When he started this job I loved having my 2-3 free nights a week and the dogs loved it because they got back in bed.

When we moved I hated it.  I was pregnant and hated doing everything in a house myself (I think because we have a 2 family house I felt safe because I could call or bang the wall to get to the guys infront)  Granted the first night in the house alone our psycho neighbor knocked on door to "meet neighbors" and I screamed I got guns and will shoot! LOL

It is a bit different with the baby now.  I don't cook so I eat microwave or out when he works.

You will get used to it and then it will stop and you will wish you had at least a night alone:)

  • DH works from 3-11, doesn't get home until 12:15ish. Then there's nights like last night where he worked 3-11 then from 11-7. On those nights, I will stay at my moms. I can't sleep alone it scares me so even if I tried I wouldn't get much sleep. And actually I rather sleep at my moms and have him sleep peacefully when he gets home until he gets up so he's well rested when he has to leave for work. I'll go home and wake him up, make his lunch, and something to eat and he'll be on his merry way. Those nights I have sleepovers with my puppies and watch the movie channels laying in bed, it's fabulous =)
  • dh works @ night so I usually cook and put a plate away from him, if he does not eat, he eats it for lunch the next day. depending on what I cook the kids will eat what I make, sometimes my oldest will eat frozen pizzas, a sandwich, or whatever he is in the mood for, its always something quick.
  • we  both work nights but my days off rotate so sometimes I am alone at night. It helps sleeping alone that we have a dog-she likes to sleep in bed with me and I feel more secure. I also usually set the alarm since I am a heavy sleeper.

When I cook I make extra because he will eat it when he gets home or the next day. I usually make something simple because extravagent meals dont taste the same when they are nuked the next day.

I get laundry done, read, nest, occasionally clean if I have the energy

  • I try to cook earlier and pack up some tupperware for him to bring to work. Sometimes I even put a little note in his bag. I think the best perk is the morning- not having everyone take a shower at once.  At night, it is good having some alone time. I also LOVE having the TV  to myself. Enjoy this time!

Our schedules have just been so inconsistent since I got preggers. 3 X a week I work from home and he attempts to chat with me the ENTIRE time. I have to explain to him that I have a lot of work to get done and I'm trying to prove myself to be proficient when it's time to negotiate my schedule after LO arrives.

  • I usually cook for myself. H will normally eat while at work or pick up something on his way home.

When he's not home I watch all those shows he hates to watch.  Then i'll normally read in bed until he gets home if I can stay up that long. I do keep on more lights than normal and thankfully I hope 2 big dogs which makes me feel a little safer.
