champagne dress for a wedding?

I bought a dress for a wedding in May that I LOVE, and then found out that it's the same color as the bridesmaid's dresses.  Sigh.

Now I'm considering a different dress, but I'm not sure if it's ok to wear champagne to a wedding.  Too close to white??

Re: champagne dress for a wedding?

  • Personally, I wouldn't wear it. I feel like it is too close since champagne is an option for some dress colors and especially since it is the same color as the bridesmaids.
  • Haha, I must not have worded that well - it's NOT the same color as the bridesmaids.  The dress I had already bought was purple, which turns out to be the color of the WP dresses and that's why I'm now looking for a new dress.

I know for a fact that the bride's dress is not champagne colored, it's diamond white so almost true white.  I do worry that it's too close to white, though.  I wouldn't have thought anything of it if someone wore a champagne dress to my wedding, but I don't want to commit a huge faux pas.

  • You worded it fine. My reading comprehension today sucks, I will blame it on the lack of coffee. Ugh...sorry.

I never noticed what anyone else was wearing at our wedding and if the bride is in diamond white your dress will looking significantly darker.

    Off to drink more coffee...

  • Hmm.  Do you think red would be ok? If it's not skanky?  I'm thinking this:

  • ooo im loving that dress in red!

  • My personal opinion would be not to wear the champagne. The red is pretty.

  • I like the red. With black accessories it would look great.
  • I also would not wear a champagne dress. But I do like the red one. And did I hear something about a purple dress, since i'm obsessed with purple right now I think that would be super cute.

  • Champagne is iffy. I think it really depends on how well you know the bride and if she'd be upset over it. Otherwise, I really, really, like the red.

Someone on SB posted about whether or not to wear this dress from DB to a wedding since its such a light pink color. http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Ruched-Stretch-Taffeta-Dress-with-Pleated-Bust-211C10690_Special-Occasions-Shop-By-Occasion-Cocktail-Party-Dresses

If it helps any, the majority of the answers were yes, wear it. Although I have absolutely no where to wear it and I'm not nearly tan enough for that color, I.WANT.THAT.DRESS!

I love that dress and want it even though I don't have the figure OR anywhere to where it.

I don't see a problem with a champagne colored dress - especially if it's a more formal, evening wedding.  I'd probably go with the red if the wedding is a bit more casual or earlier in the day.  If that makes sense at all.

crap, really?  It's a fairly formal, evening wedding.  Not black tie, but Jeff is wearing a suit.  I thought the fabric (it's silk satin) would be formal enough.  I already ordered it because there was only one left on 6pm.com (for 70% off), but I might return it (I'd only lose out on $4.95 shipping if I did) if it doesn't seem formal enough.

    This is the champagne dress:

I actually bought it even though I wasn't sure I could wear it to the wedding, because I love it so much.  I am worried that this bride is the type to get upset about people wearing white to her wedding, though; she actually commented to me about someone wearing white to my wedding, and I hadn't even noticed.  It's possible that champagne wouldn't bug her, or that at her own wedding she wouldn't notice, but I'm afraid that's kind of a big risk.

And I love love love my purple dress, but don't you guys think it would be weird to wear the same color as the bridesmaids?  Maybe I need to make a poll.

I was wondering this but forgot to ask when I posted.  In that case, you're damned either way.  If she'd get pissy about someone wearing white to YOUR wedding, you probably can't get away with the red dress either since you'll look like a hussy.  Wink  Wear whatever you are most comfortable in/like the best.  (I am no help at all).

  • FFS.  Looking for a dress has been a nightmare.  Everything is either some shade of white, black, purple, or red.  All of these colors are taboo (purple because of the WP) historically so whereTF does that leave me?  When you then include that only some colors and styles look good on me, and lots of dresses are too skanky or informal, I am screwed.  Sigh.  I have a closet full of dresses and nothing works.  :(

  • Apparently this "don't wear red" thing is something I've never heard of. Seriously, wtf? You can't wear anything close to white, you can't wear the color of the WP, you're not supposed to wear black (which is think is BS) and you're not supposed to wear red? Jesus. Everyone should just wear grey to every wedding.

Were we ever this insane? I mean, my WP color was dark red. My FSIL (not in WP) wore a dark red dress to the wedding to match BIL. I really did not care one bit.  As a matter of fact, her colors are blue and I'm thinking of wearing this:

  • This stuff definitely doesn't bother me.  Supposedly, wearing red historically meant that you'd slept with the groom -  but this makes no sense to me, because who would openly advertise something like that?  I think that both red and black have become more acceptable, and it really depends on the style and fabric.  Personally, I feel like a slutty dress is inappropriate and red makes that worse, but there are acceptable red dresses out there (and I like the one I got).

  • QoA, cute cute dress.

I don't wear anything close to a solid white (no ivory, champagne, lightest pink) but I think prints with white are ok, and red is fine.

I agree that prints are ok.

And I am going to play 'annoying poster who only hears what she wants to hear' and use the bolded statement to fuel the part of my brain that wants to wear the red dress.

  • I think the red is adorable, and as long as you're not the MIL in a screaming red look at meeeeeeeeeeeeee dress you're good to go.
