Health Issue- Lots of Doctor Appointments

Hello!  I'm wondering how much medical information I have to give my employer.  I have been diagnosed with a medical condition and need to see a doctor once a week and then another doctor once every two weeks.  I don't know how long this is going to continue.  Right now I'm pretty sure my boss is assuming I'm pregnant (which I'm not), but I'm trying to figure out how much I have to say without going into all of the details.

Also, should I look into FMLA?  I have been getting morning or evening appointments, so I haven't been missing much work.

Re: Health Issue- Lots of Doctor Appointments

  • I had fertility issues and had to make a lot of dr appointments. All I did was tell my boss up front that I had a non-life-threatening medical condition that required a series of doctor appointments. I said I would do my best to go early in the morning or after work, and would make up the time if I needed to. My boss was very understanding, and didn't ask for any additional detail.

If you haven't been missing much work, I wouldn't go straight to FMLA. But it might be worth it to talk to your HR rep about the situation (again, without going into huge detail) and see what your options are.

GL and I hope you are successful with your treatment.

  • You need to file for intermittent FMLA. You don't need to disclose anything to your employer.

This is what I did.  I had so many appointments while trying to get pregnant, and then lots of complications when pregnant that required more appointments.  I'm a teacher and get out early enough to get appointments in the late afternoon without taking time off.  There were plenty that I had to take sick time for though.  Thankfully, my administration was understanding.
