Did This cleaner ruin my bathtub??

SO our bathtub in our master bathroom is a darkish greyish brownish color a big garden tub with a rippled floor and has like an arm rest ledge on each side inside the tub. It never "looked" dirty before but I knew hat it was. So i always clean it once a week just like the rest of the bathroom and use a lysol wipe to touch up here and there and between cleanings.

I bought a new cleaner to try because we have really hard water where we live and it makes it really hard to keep our stand up  shower with glass doors clean so i bought

Scrubbing Bubbles  Mega Foamer Shower Cleaner... on the recommendation of a friend and it worked wonderful on my shower first time ever it took all the hard water and soap residue and film off without having to really work hard scrubbing it.

Well i decided to use it on my bathtub too and 4 months later my tub still looks horrible. On the bottom of the tub there is white spots everywhere in every little ripple and indention it is a white chalky look.

We tried soaking it with everything from different cleaners to vinegar, i tried scrubbing it with a brush,I tried a scrubber pad i tried comet, i tried bleach cleaner, , I tried an old toothbrush and toothpaste and a mr clean magic eraser. I have tried lime away and CLR , Kaboom,&  Oxy Clean.  I tried the rubbing compound that you use on your car to remove dull cloudy residues. I have tried about everything I can think of including using the same thing i used on it that did this to it! NOTHING  HAS WORKED

The only thing that seems to help is scratching at it with your fingernails... It seems to somewhat go way. Which this is a big tub and scratching the whole tub with my fingernail would be a backbreaking time consuming task that I really dont want to do!

I dont know if it has left a residue or perhaps broken up some of that hard water and made it visible now. Or if I have ruined the bathtub by taking the finish off of it ( i dunno if that is possible but it was suppose to be safe for my tub) but it is driving me INSANE! My bathtub looks like I havent EVER cleaned it & it really bothers me bc i pride myself in a clean home and i feel like it makes my bathroom appear dirty

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or Ideas as to what might have happened?

Re: Did This cleaner ruin my bathtub??

  • You may damage the tub by using all the different methods that you've been trying. Why not call the manufacturer of the Scrubbing Bubbles? The toll free customer service number should be on the back of the can.
  • Get a dense sponge, wet it and coat it with a 1/4 inch layer of plain baking soda. Scrub at a small section and rinse with boiling water.  See if that will remove the white coating.

The baking soda will act as a mild abrasive.  The boiling water will dissolve the baking soda and anything that came with it.

    Good luck

  • If scratching it helps, you need an abrasive like Magdala said.

Also, are you using bar soap? Bar soap leaves all sorts of horrible junk behind. If you switch to a body wash, you might find less crap in your tub. I managed to convince DH to quit using bar soap, and now we only have to clean the bathroom once a month or so... well, the shower part anyway.

  • we use that on the walls, but i'm pretty sure the product says not to use it on the tub part.

i use a separate cleaner on the tub.

if you are unable to fix it with cleaners, you may consider reglazing the tub.
