Anniv ideas in Bay Area

We live in the south bay, but we're planning a weekend getaway for our anniversary in April. Since flights are too expensive for the places we would like to go, we'll most likely do something closer by -- like stay overnight somewhere, eat good food, etc.

SF is on the list, but we don't know what to do or where to stay yet. We're also open to other places where we could just drive. Any ideas on what to do, where to eat, where to stay?

TIA!

  • When we want to get out of town for the weekend, we usually head down to Monterey/Carmel.  There's the aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, Pt. Lobos, the Carmel Mission, 17 Mile Drive, the Point Pinos light house, etc.  DH's favorite restaurant down there is Passion Fish in Pacific Grove.

  • My dh and I had a getaway weekend and went to Saratoga. We did the horseback riding and wine tasting package. They only have it on certain weekends of the month though. I think it was Gerrod Farms but my work computer isn't letting look it up :( Anyhow, it was a lot of fun. I read some good reviews and bad reviews but its all what your make of it. They cheese and crackers weren't that great that they served but we had a blast! Plus it was really nice to hang out, just the two of us.

  • I vote for Carmel/Monterey as well.  We were just there 6 months ago and it was just such a nice weekend!  I would recommend Il Fornaio, it's a chain but it was really nice and really good Italian.  It's right downtown in Carmel and it was nice to walk around after dinner.

  • We watched travelzoo and got a great deal at the Mark Hopkins in SF.  It's really close to where they cable car lines intersect.  We went to the wharf and walked to the Ferry Building.  Rode the cable cars and street cars.  Saw Beach Blanket Babylon and ate in Little Italy, explored Chinatown and found a dim sum place.  There were lots of other things we wanted to do but we ran out of time (and had more fun sleeping in than getting out early)
  • Not sure if you are a wine drinker, but I actually prefer a wine country getaway.  There are so many good sparkling wine places, I love it.

  • They have mini-cruises in San Francisco. Its a two day cruise around and in the bay and comes with everything. My coworker goes every year for her birthday and she loves it. Its cost efficient, if  thats important.
