Good Sameritan - a vent

this morning I drove up to an accident seconds after a young teenaged driver had tried to beat a red light and struck a woman walking in the crosswalk.  This was literally in the middle of one of the busiest streets in my neighborhood and is 2 lanes, each direction and heavily traveled.  I sat my butt down in the middle of the street and held this 24 week pregnant woman's head in line with her spine while waiting for the ambulance that another bystander called for when I pulled up.

When the police arrived, they seriously got mad at me because I illegally parked my car! (yes, it was in a marked no parking area but this woman was laying in the middle of the street for heaven's sake - in my humble opinion an emergency trumps no parking.) For the first time in my life, I got lippy with a police officer when I told him that he could take the keys out of my pocket and move it if he wanted to, or write me a ticket for all I cared but I wasn't letting go of her head until the paramedics arrived and put a C-Collar on her to stabilize her neck.  It shut him up really fast but good gracious - how about trying a little harder to not be such a jerk. I would have LOVED to go fight that parking ticket.

And I am so bummed because I only caught her first name and didn't hear where she lives.  I have been thinking about her all day because I want to know if not only she is OK but if her baby is too.  Of course there isn't anyone I can call who would tell me anything - as they should - but I am kicking myself for not throwing a business card in her purse or something.  I really hope everything is OK.

Re: Good Sameritan - a vent

  • Oh my god. What a scary way to start your day! Good for you for standing up to that cop, why in H would he give you a hard time in an obviously serious situation.

I'm praying that both she and her baby are ok. A woman's body is designed to keep the baby safe so I am going to tell myself that the baby is ok. I don't know how big the area you live in is, but would something like that appear in the newspaper? In my hometown it definitely would (probably front page), but where I live now it wouldn't even get a blip unless the neighborhood had a blog or listserv.

  • Wow, good thing you were there to help her...I'm sure she REALLY appreciated that.  What did the teenager do?
  • Our very local paper might have a blurb on it but I'm sure they won't name names.  I guess I'll have to be good with never knowing but I honestly can't stop wondering today.  There ended up being a half dozen squad cars, 2 fire trucks and an ambulance when all was said and done so it would have attracted attention.

The teenager stuck around, thank god.  I didn't talk to her much, I was more concerned  with the lady in the street and guessing I was the only one with any first aid experience judging by the number of people just standing around (I used to be a First Responder and taught CPR/First Aid for a job) so I just sorta took charge and started delegating.  The driver was pacing and talking on her phone when I pulled up - part of me wonders if she was on it when the accident happened.

This is the SECOND car/pedestrian crash I've witnessed or helped immediately afterwards in the last year.  The last one was car/bike rider.

  • You are so lucky to have training (or, rather, the people you are helping are lucky!). I have some CPR/First Aid experience and always stop but I can only help so much.

One of my best friends does Fire and Rescue. I have so much respect for people who can do that! Some of her stories are hilarious but so many more are tragic.
