What are you thoughts on using a functional resume? Will it place me at a disadvantage? I'm applying for entry-level hr positions. I'm graduating in Dec and only have one year of HR assistant experience which was about 4 years ago. My recent work experience has been in the insurance industry in customer service and operation support roles. My career psych professor suggested that I use a functional format rather than chronological to highlight the HR experience that I have though it is not as recent as some of my other jobs. Is the chronological resume preferred? Any advice is appreciated thanks!

Re: Resume format question
JMO, but I prefer to see it chronologically because that makes logical sense to me. That said, if the position focuses on experience that's dated, I include a highlight summary right up front that quickly tells them what I'm good at and how it will fit the job. Either a table of desired expertise, or a quick paragraph of my related strengths. Good luck!
