H has been planning an Alaskan cruise. Originally we were going to go on it but I was less then excited about it. Then with the whole new job thing, and my surgery we were going to cancel. H just emailed me that we have enough people going that we would cruise for free. We'd just have to pay for airfare to Seattle, and whatever excursions we want to do. I'm so torn. Its about a $3000 cruise that we'd be free and clear on. However we are looking at $800 on airfare and god knows how much on excursions.
If we cancel H will make $1400 comission. UGH..... I really think we should cancel. I know H really wants to go though.

Re: I dont know what to do
If I am understanding his email correctly if we go on that cruise we woldnt get the commision. The comission would go towards paying for the cruise. So its either free cruise or $1,400.
I guess my reservation is that MY BATHROOM IS STILL NOT FREAKING DONE!! If we go on this cruise our tax return will be spent on the airfair and excursions for the cruise. Where as we could get an additional $1400 to put into the house. If H gets this job and we need to move we have got to put money into this house or it will never sell.
But who turns down a free vacation?!
I wish I had something more helpful to say... but I agree - it's a once in a lifetime thing. I would jump on it. Especially given that you're saving $3000... 3k that you did originally plan (at some point) to spend on it regardless. J and I took a trip to Hawaii (where he proposed) at the spur of the moment (is that the right saying?). we spent a LOT on it, but we had the money lying around at the time also. Had we not gone, I doubt we would ever be going anytime soon. Same for our Costa Rica honeymoon. They weren't the smartest trips financially, but given where we are financially NOW... I'm glad we did it, I'm glad we experienced it (especially before having kids!).
But you shouldn't listen to me. I'm a sucker for living in the moment and "you can't take it with you when you die" blah blah blah. $1400 is a lot of money (given the repairs you've mentioned and I don't recall what your IF status is right now - like will insurance help etc etc etc).
so what did h say when you mentioned this? hmmmm... that's tough. when will you find out about the job?
does it help if you don't think of it as a "free" cruise? because you're actually using the $1400 commission money to pay for it. it doesn't sound like you can afford that right now. also if he's a travel agent or something there will be opportunities. not saying you shouldn't go, but i can definitely see both sides. you don't want to be in a pinch if you need to sell the house. but you also don't want to miss an opportunity for something that may or may not happen. on the other hand, it sounds like you're talking yourself into it being an "opportunity" like you'd rather do the bathroom than the cruise, and it's your h that really wants to do the cruise.
That pretty much sums up how I feel. Im waiting for him to call me back. I wish he wasnt closing tonight so that we could talke face to face about it. I'm going to tell himm tht I dont think we should not do it. All the excursion I want to do are the $$$ ones. The money is just going to add up quickly. If we knew we werent going to need to move this year it would be a different story.
H's interview for the position is Thursday evening. I think the deadline to cancel the cruise without penalty is the 31st of this month. So we will probably not know about the job before we need to make this decision.
Right now I have 50% coverage on th proccedures and meds. Its the medications that are outrageous. I am curently paying $4000 into a FSA to use this year for IF bills. I'm hoping to do an IUI sometime in the next month or 2 b/c we have some donated medication. If come this August I'm still not pregnant we are going to pick up Hs insurance in addition to mine so that we will have 100% coverage for IVF.
Totally unrelated to this thread but sine I'm talking about our IF... H has another Semen Analysis this Thursday. The same day as his interview talk about pressure!! If that is SA is ok we are going to do an IUI with my next cycle!!
Good luck with your next cycle!!!!
I am typically very thrifty and would prefer to do something "smart" with my money, BUT - I am the other way with vacations...Vacations like that are a once in a lifetime thing, and if someone said "You can go to Ireland for 2 weeks for $1k tomorrow", (if DH had the leave), even if we didn't have the $1K, I would go. Because I think the memories and experiences are worth having to pay that back. And I know it 's not an issue of you not having the money at all, but just sayin even if it was that, I'd still go. Have fun! I don't know anyone who has not enjoyed their AK cruise. What you see is soooo different from the AK I know (interior is much different) that it's all new to me too.
Woohoo!!
I hope I didn't come off as prying or too personal or whatever. It was just something that came to mind, and since we were talking finances and we all know how expensive IF treatment can be (and how sporadic insurance can be with it as well), I just thought I'd bring it up.
Nope not at all. I'm pretty much an open book about the IF stuff. I was going to post an update wed night/thurs morning asking for super sperm vibes hehehe
We made it official this am. We are not going. I really dont have the PTO time since I was out of work for 4 weeks in Jan. My next schedule signup was up today and I needed to fill it out ASAP. The begining of that vacation was on the end of that schedule so a decision had to be made. Oh well.
If we dont end up moving, dont get pregnant, or find ourselves with an excess of money later in the year we will go on a vacation. We still have our annual OC trip in July anyhow. Who knows maybe we will do a long weekend at the Atlantis again.
