I feel like a B*** pointing this out b/c I did this for tofu (sorry Jennrs, I think you're awesome though!) but don't use Vick's unless it is specifically for babies: http://www.parenting.com/blogs/show-and-tell/new-warning-about-vicks-vaporub
I am going through the same crap with Cole, poor little guy. I would agree with everything else Jennrs said. I was going to use honey but looked it up first-even though honey is ok after a year they don't recommend using it as a "homeopathic" remedy until after 2 yrs of age. bummer b/c it always helps me!
Hmmm. It doesn't say anything about using it on their feet. We use this rub and it's ingredients are very simple. I wonder what ingredients the issues are connected to. Thanks for the info. I'm gonna have to do some digging around. When I googled our chest rub a few homemade chest rub recipes came up--I might look into those. :-)

I didn't click but I think it's the menthol that causes respiratory distress?
The best thing that I bought for my girls when they had a runny nose was a battery powered nose sucker. Best $20 I spent. twice. It saves you from going in there multiple times which actually swells the nasal passages worse.
Otherwise, staying away from the dr's office (tons of germs), washing hands, and waiting it out are about all you can do.
It SEEMS like you should visit the Dr when they're so miserable but unless you think they really have a bacteria of some sort, there isn't much that can be done until they're toddlers. Obviously if the cough gets bad or the ears are hurting that's another story.
