Things everyone should be able to do (or learn how to do)
I was thinking about this idea this morning. I think everyone should know how to change a diaper and balance a checkbook, among many other things. What do you think?
Re: Things everyone should be able to do (or learn how to do)
I am going to have to disagree with that one!! Ha,ha!!
You never know when you are going to need it. I had to teach M how to do it when he watched his nephew. I told him there was no way you could leave the poor kid with a smelly diaper.
Check your oil
Turn off the water main at your house
Pump gas (seriously- I worked with a woman who could not do this- she was of a different generation! I taught her on lunch hour one day. Sheesh)
Drive stick
Basics of changing a tire
CPR/Heimlech
Start a fire?
Diaper changing - I never changed a diaper until I had my first baby.. no one taught me..

I had the water main problem at my house before and didn't know where to turn it off. I had moved in shortly before that and my water heater broke and was leaking. I had to call the previous owners and they told me where the main line was.
Also, my aunt didn't learn how to pump gas until she was in her 50's even though she drove. She always made her husband get the gas when the car was low.
Also I know that it was mentioned below but my (male) friend in college didn't know how to change a tire and I had to do it for him. It was something my dad taught me before I went away to college with my car (since he wouldn't be there to help me if I needed it).
Good point.. def good to know how to turn of power, gas, and water at the house!
I think people should also know how to read a real - paper - map. Since the GPS has come into being, I think it is a skill people will start to lose. Not that too much goes into it, but there are a lot of things we rely on technology for, where we lose the actual skills (like a calculator, GPS, etc).

Great ideas! I still don't know how to drive a stick, though - never knew anyone who had one for me to learn on!
My top three are:
Basic car maintenance (change tire, check oil, pump gas, add washer fluid)
Cook one decent meal (at least)
How to write a letter (Do they even teach this in school any more?)
I see this and raise you how to address a letter. I am surprised that many people can't write a proper address on an envelope (where to put return address, stamp, etc.)
I'm sorry but this is funny. I can just picture it haha. I've seen people get peed on by baby boys while they are getting their diaper changed lol.
Ummmm interesting idea. I agree with what everyone else has said so I won't repeat those.
Mine are:
- laundry
- say no when needed
- ask for what you need/deserve (like a raise, not greedy stuff)
- mow the lawn
- grow vegtables
- keep their mouths shut. So many people just talk without thinking. Ugh!
- edit their pictures. By this I mean when they go on vacation or similar and want to share pictures on FB....don't put every damn picture up. Pick the best, keep it to be about 80-100. Show a nice representation of your trip or event. No one else cares about seeing 3 albums of 300 + pictures that have the blurry ones, an inside jokes with you and your SO that no one else will get, the same rock from 20 angles. Learn to edit and show the best of the best of your trip! We want the condensed version people! Well I do.
OMG, yes! I had a floormate in college who dry cleaned EVERYTHING (even her underwear!) because she didn't know how to do laundry. We offered to teach her, but she didn't even *want* to know!
That must have been really expensive!
