I am woman, hear me roar!

So, on Sunday we were sitting on the couch watching my new favorite television network, DIY Network.  It suddenly hit me...I want to get my contractor's license.

I have the brains to pass the test.  My dad has the experience to do the work.  So what's stopping me from doing it?  Certainly not the fact that I'm a woman and construction is a man's world.

So you know what...I'm going for it.  Well, as soon as I've studied for the exam and come up with the $$ to pay the fees.

I am woman...

Anyone else want to share any "I am woman" stories?

Re: I am woman, hear me roar!

  • I hate construction with all my heart.

And as a woman that has been in construction, it's not so bad. You get a couple of guys every now and then with a sh!tty attitude, but I've found for the most part, no one bats an eyes. Sometimes things will be awkward until you drop something/make a mistake and start cursing like a sailor.

But I hate the hours, how your work is always subject to the weather and the seasons, etc. I hated lugging 5 gallon buckets full of grout or cement up and down 4 story ladders.

But seriously, good for you! If your passion is to build, go for it! And the numbers of women in construction are increasing.

  • Woohoo for you!!!
  • Good for you! After a few summers helping my ex's dad out in the cabinet shop, I decided to stick with my passion for kids and not woodwork. As fun as it was, it wasn't what I wanted to do forever.

Seriously, good luck with the test and everything!

  • Sorry about my debbie downer (hehe) post before. My job was awful and I know all construction/contractor jobs aren't like that. Especially if you get to work inside, install/design kitchens and bathrooms and stuff.

You're smart; you'll definitely pass the test. And if any guy tries to put you down for being a woman in construction, give him hlel!!!!!!
