Cell phone provider?

I posted awhile back about moving to RI soon and got some great suggestions about places to look for housing.  Now I'm wondering if you can help decide on the best cell phone provider.  We currently have Sprint, but our contract ends around the time we'll be moving, so we are in a good position to switch if someone else provides better coverage in RI.  Any recommendations?  Thanks!

Re: Cell phone provider?

  • i had verizon for 10+ years and loved them. i recently had to switch to at&t b/c i live in northern RI. (glocester) and with verizon i had zero service at my house. with at&t it is fine. i do like the selection of phones better with verizon.

  • Dee raises a good point.  There are many weird sections of RI where cell reception is spotty.  I've had Verizon for about 10 years too, and love them.  I would suggest waiting until you see where you're going to be living and test service then.  Or if you already know where you're moving to, maybe another nestie is in the area and can give you better advice.

    Good Luck!

  • We just north of Providence and have Verizon.  We've never had one problem with their coverage....

Yes. There are random dead zones in random spots with any provider. You won't know until you are here. Or you could try checking coverage maps from the individual providers.

I have used T Mobile all over the state without problems. There was a random dead spot where I used to live (that has since gotten better coverage), and there was a random spot on my drive to/from work where I sometimes lost reception (but that was mostly to an old phone).

  • Thanks, everyone.  We don't know exactly where we'll be living, but it will definitely be southern RI.  I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself since we won't be moving until July, but I'm having a baby at the end of May and trying to take care of as many details as possible before then.  It sounds like I'll need to wait on the cell phones until we have a better idea of where we'll be living.
  • We live in southern RI (Wakefield/Narragansett) and we don't have any problems with Verizon.  I don't blame you for wanting to take care of as much as possible with a baby on the way.  Congratulations!
