Finally in Rhode Island... more help, please :)

Thanks for all the recommendations you ladies have provided.  We finally got to Providence last Monday and have been exploring our 'hood by foot every day (which is wild, since when we left the midwest it was 68 degrees and now we're back in scarves and gloves)  We live on the east side right on the edge of Brown's campus.  I've been taking the girls to a park on Brooks St, but there aren't many people there (about a block or so south of Brooks & Power Sts).  Where are all the moms & kids?  I need adults to talk to :(

On a side note, we love it here.  To be ale to live some place where you don't even need a car has been awesome and there certainly are not historic homes like this in the midwest.  It's just absolutely charming and the girls are over the moon about living by the ocean (yes, they think the bays/harbors are the "ocean" but it works!)

Re: Finally in Rhode Island... more help, please :)

  • try these two:

Gladys Potter Playground (The Baby Park), located at Humboldt Ave. & Elton St. - this one is much larger and has lots of families

Morris Avenue Tot Lot, Located on Morris Ave., Opposite Fisher St., smaller and more intimate and will give you lots of opportunities to actually talk to moms

  • Welcome to RI!  I hope the move wasn't too bad with two little ones.  I wish I had more to offer you on Providence, but we're in the southern part of the state.  Good Luck!
  • I'm in MA, but I've been to Gladys Potter Playground and my daughter loved it! She was just 2yo when we went.

  • Welcome, to RI!

DD is 2, and we'd be interested in getting together for a playdate. PM me :)

  • no park recs but glad you got to RI safely, best of luck settling in!

  • Welcome welcome!!! If you're loving RI now, you'll love it even more when the weather warms up, the flowers are out, the trees are green...and you can actually swim in the ocean! :-)  Hope you meet up with some other moms up there! I know there are some really active community groups and good parks up there, so hopefully you'll meet folks. There is also a great farmer's market tomorrow night in Pawtucket at the Hope Artist's village-- http://www.farmfresh.org/food/farmersmarkets_details.php?market=29

You can end up meeting and chatting with a lot of folks there! Enjoy!

  • A farmer's market? This early in the year?  You have to wait until May at least in the midwest.  I think even Chicago's big one was the end of April.  That's awesome.  Thanks for letting me know :)

On that note, in Indianapolis we had Freshmarkets, which were grocery stores with a lot of local meats and dairy products.  Is there anything like that here?  The Eastside Market was pretty nice.  Whole Foods is great and all, but I think they're pricy, or maybe I was just spoiled by FM.

Ha, I'm trying to figure out how.  Can anyone direct me to the right spot?

  • under the response of the person you want to PM, click "contact"
  • And if you want to find / check your PMs, there's a link over on the left at the bottom. To reply to a PM, use the "Quick Reply" option in the private message.

I made this image up when they first introduced the PM feature on the Nest:

  • lol, now I feel like an idiot :/  Thanks:)

  • If you don't use the PM feature, it doesn't immediately jump out at you. No worries!

FYI: there's no automatic notification when you get a PM, so if you send one to somebody, it's customary to "page" them on the board so that they know to look for it.

  • I'm about 10 min away so I'm not too much of a help, but welcome to RI!!!

I think I know that playground on Brook Street, I used to work at the ZBar on the corner of Brook & Wickenden- and it never seemed to be a very busy park.

  • YAY! Glad you're finally here and getting settled! I agree, if you like it now, wait til it warms up! I'm more south so no help on parks...The farmer's market is great though! Be sure to check it out!
  • For a Freshmarket/Whole Foods alternative, try Eastside Market Place http://www.eastsidemarket.com/  You'll love it! We had Freshmarket when I was in Atlanta, and I like Eastside even better.

As for the Farmer's Markets-- RI is VERY big into local agriculture, its really neat. In the winter, there are several "indoor" farmers markets both during the week (the one in Pawtucket I posted about on Wed afternoon/evening) and on weekends (Pawtucket also does a saturday market, and there is a "coastal growers indoor market" down in North Kingstown in an old mill building). In the summer, there are TONS of markets that pop all over both during the week and weekends. Its great!

     Again, enjoy and welcome!

Hello, welcome to RI!!!  Happy to hear that you're enjoying it so far.  :)
  • Hallo! We're about 10 minutes away too. I work during the week so I can only go on the info I USED to use when I was a SAHM. Humbolt is awesome if you can get there. It's a bit of a hike in the cold.

If you want to get together any time on the weekends, lemme know. I've got a car (though I don't know how it'll handle 3 car seats) and a 2 year old as well. Oh and I have all the fun memberships like the childrens museum, zoo, mystic etc so I can share.
