new cleaning question

hi!

we're moving into our first home tomorrow. i'd like to do a "clean sweep"- go through the house from top to bottom and make it spotless before we move all of our stuff in. Any tips/advice on how to get this done?

I think I envision some sort of checklist, but I've never had to clean a whole house before.

Re: new cleaning question

  • Honestly, with an empty house, it's pretty easy.

Start from top to bottom. Brush away cobwebs from ceilings and corners, wipe down ceiling fan paddles. I remove covers from light fixtures and run them through the dishwasher.

Wipe down walls as needed. Clean windows, paying attention to the sill and sash. Open windows and clean inside between window and screen.

Wipe down baseboards. Dust top of door ledge. Polish doorknobs. Wipe down outlet covers and light swtich plates. I love using baby wipes for this! Wipe down closet shelves. If you have a fireplace, dust and wipe down the mantel and screen. Vacuum and shampoo/polish floor

Kitchens... same list as above, but wipe down cabinets inside and out. Polish sink. Wipe down fridge inside and out. Remove shelves and bins. I like to pull out the fridge and range and clean behind them. Clean the dust of the fridge coils to keep it in good working order. Clean oven, wipe down stovestop, clean burner pans or replace if needed. Wipe down microwave/vent hood with degreaser. Pay attention to backsplashes and clean with degreaser if needed. Wipe down dishwasher inside and out. Dust on top of cabinets. Wi down countertops. sweep and mop.

Bathroom...same basic list as above, but add in toilet, sink, and tub to clean.

Sweep out garage, dust away cobwebs.

  • Whatever ends up working for you, leave the mopping for last!  Our families got a little over zealous in "wanting to help" and were scrubbing floors... in rooms that we were all still walking through.
  • thanks, girls....this is a great starting point.

  • I did this last weekend. Just got Lysol wipes and Bathroom/Kitchen cleaner and a pair of gloves and went to town. I still have the fridge to clean, bathrooms and sunroof windows, but we aren't moved in yet. The thing I did first was disenfect (sp?) every doorknob, handle, etc. With three kids and dogs, the house probably has some germs.

Good luck and wear clothes you don't care about. Bleach stains suck. ^_^

  • I would recommend prioritizing rooms (kitchen, a bathroom, main bedroom) and going room by room.  That way even if you don't finish, you'll have basic areas cleaned so you can put things there.
