Recruiter/ Staffing Coodinator

I had a pre screen interview for a recruiter/ staffing coordinator position.  I am interested in the position but I have never been in a job like this before.  The person I interviewed with is being promoted so all he had to say were very good things.  I really want to get a full picture of what the job from people who are in a similar position.  Are any of you staffing coordinators/ recruiters, what do you like about the job, what do you dislike, and how did get started.

Re: Recruiter/ Staffing Coodinator

  • I have been in recruiting for 10 years and LOVE it.....Its great helping someone find their career! :) There are lots of ups and downs; The things I love are its fast paced; I manage 20-30 job recs at a time; I have built great relationships with hiring managers; and candidates, you get to talk to a lot of people; I spend the majority of my day on the phone; I personally dislike the administrative part; the  job postings; the reference checks; background checks; that sort of thing; I would rather focus on the people part of it, but it has to be done. It can also be disappointing when a candidate you have built a realtionship with flat out lies to you; maybe about education or criminal record etc. I initally started my career in resturant management; and worked for a headhunting firm that speciliazes in hospitality; worked there for 4 years; and have been at my current position which is direct hire for 4 years; I would never go back to a staffing company; once you leave and work directly for the company thats doing the hirining you can really focus on hiring the right peopel rather than selling the job like you do in staffing. I have my BA in Management and a concentration in HR as well as my PHR. You can feel free to PM me if I can answer any other questions :) Good Luck!

  • I was in recruiting and I moved to sales, now I'm thinking about going back. I really liked recruiting because you develop great relationships with people and give them jobs.  It's fun.  Keep in mind, when it comes to staffing there are people who will try to lie, steal and cheat there way into a job and you need a good B.S. meter.  You will spend most of the day on the phone and if you need to get a hold of someone who is already working you will have to make some calls after hours and on weekends.

Recruiting is by no means easy, but sales is way more challenging (I have sold both B2B and B2C pieces of 150K equipment and services).  I'm considering taking a pay cut to go back to recruiting because I want to start a family and it will be lower stress but still challenging.

  • I recruit adult college students.  No matter what field of recruiting you get into, it is extremely REWARDING.  The hours are great, the people are amazing, and you feel good about yourself and what you are doing. Sounds like a great position and go for it!
