So, I'm looking to reupholster the chairs in our dining area. I'm first wondering, where should I look for some cute fabric? Do I just go to JoAnn's or are there better websites or stores where I should look? I'm imagining I need a tougher/thicker fabric since it will be used for seating, but I just have no idea where to look.
I realize this may all sound dumb, but I am generally clueless when it comes to all things related to home decor.
Re: Fabric Question
When I needed fabric I went to Field's on 44th. It was fun looking around; I imagine JoAnn's would have similar selection. Being there made me wish I was handy with a sewing machine (or needle + thread...) but alas, I was just there to pick fabric for someone else to sew something for me.
Have fun!

Oh yes it's Fields, not Fieldings. I think Fieldings is a furniture store. Duh.
I cannot sew a button, but I can wield a staple gun - so I figured reupholster was the way to go!
Thanks ladies! This is my first attempt at kind of DIY so I'm excited. :-)
I just wanted to say that I'm impressed by your ambition. I don't even have the confidence to attempt a DIY project. (Although I do sew buttons, but only because my mother quit doing it for me.) I wish I were crafty though.
Have fun!
Field's generally has higher quality fabric brands than Joann's or Hobby Lobby, although all three do carry home decor fabrics. I'm not very familiar with home decor brands, though. Personally, I think the people working at Field's (any of the locations) are the most helpful for the widest variety of projects, so I'd start there if you aren't sure what you need.
Fabric.com is reputable and has an upholstery section under home decor fabrics if you want to get a feel for online selections.
I buy craft fabrics from fabric.com.
I've never upholstered before, but like PP said, the staff should be informed on the different fabrics.
Have fun!!!
I've gotten fabric from Fields and Joanns, but I agree that Fields has a bigger selection and more helpful staff.
And you better post pics of your project, I've reupholstered exam tables for a dr's office before, but never anything pretty haha.
As long as they don't look completely embarrassing, I will gladly post pics. I think it's semi-easy, because it's just the seat cushion - they have a wooden back. *fingers crossed*
Fun project! I'd go to Fields just for the fact that the ladies who work there will take the time to help you. I went there for fabric to make Henry pants, and the woman spent 20 minutes with me talking about thread, needles, and a bunch of other sewing stuff. I was in good hands, and you probably will be too.
Have fun!
I'm so jealous of your clothes making abilities. I'd LOVE to learn to use my sewing machine well but I get frustrated too easily. I need to take a class or something. I want to learn to quilt as well.
WSS!! While you'll pay more going to Fields, they have better stuff & the staff will help you figure things out. They'll even help you do the math so you get enough fabric on the first cut. For a project like this, I always start there & then head to JoAnn's after if I just can't find anything at Field's that I like. But then, our Field's is tiny compared to GR. I appreciate that pretty much everyone who works in those stores has extensive working knowledge of sewing. I haven't found the same to be true at JoAnns & definitely not at Hobby Lobby. Plus, by going to Fields, you are supporting a local business.
