Ugh, is there such a thing as a good substitute?

My para is out sick again today with the stomach bug that's been going around.  So, someone actually picked up the job to sub for her.  She speaks very little English and what she can say, it's difficult to understand because of her accent.

Um, a LOT of my kids have speech/hearing issues.  They have no idea what she's saying and end up leaving frustrated.

Shouldn't it be a requirement to speak English or at least be understandable, especially when working in a special ed class?  UGH!

Oh, and she stares at me.... a lot.  It's creeping me out!

Re: Ugh, is there such a thing as a good substitute?

  • Back up a sec....she's a sub, but doesn't speak much english?  Are you joking?  I mean, that's bad enough in a regular classroom, let along sped.  I'm sorry for you.

    And the staring thing...ick.

  • So basically she's just a body sitting there so the school can say the kids are supervised.
  • Upon further evaluation - I think she does speak English but it's really hard to tell because I have no idea what she's saying.

I have one student who can't read that came in for help on a reading passage. She read it with him and then started reading the questions to him.  Poor thing just stared at her like WTH?

I've seriously had to go and tell and some general ed teachers not to count off on papers the students are coming in here with today because they really have no idea what she's saying. If they can't read and don't understand her, there's NO way they'll get a good grade.

I really have no idea how sub's are hired.  I just know they have to go to an orientation and there is a big "pool" of them that our automated system calls when teachers are out.  Apparently a face to face interview is not part of the equation.

And getting a paycheck. Substitute hiring fail.

  • The saga continues:

I went to get lunch and come back to a group of 6th graders going crazy in my room and she's just sitting at the desk.  She said earlier that math was too hard for her so, I guess she decided since they are working on math she wouldn't help them.

  • I can request her to be banned from my campus. Already sent an email to my principal.  This is like the 3rd one I've done that to.  I must be the substitute nazi here.

The last one used student computers to shop.

The one before that called one of my kids stupid.  I sent her to the principal's office....seriously.  It was either that or punch her throat.

  • You're not a Nazi, you just deal with special kids. And the one who called a kid stupid is an @assh*le who needs to be taken out and shot.
  • My mom can actually request a particular sub.  She's got one particular lady she likes because she can actually speak some Spanish.  I think if my mom didn't request her or if she wasn't available it would be like you said - just pulling a name out of the pool.  I know when I was in school I had plenty of subs that were just babysitters which I think is a real waste of the school's money and the kids' time.  It's even worse for your kids when they're going to this lady for help.  Sounds to me like they might been better off without her since it seems all she's doing is confusing them.

And, to answer your question....Yes, there is such a thing as a good sub.  I had the best sub ever for 7th grade history.

  • OH, I have a lady that I love love love.  She's a retired teacher and amazing with my kids.  With that being said, my para wasn't planning to be out so, she couldn't call the lady to put her in the system.  She had to just do it from the "pool".

We have a list of good subs but there's only 3 names on it.

I hate drawing from the pool mostly because I get a call from my secretary informing me her daughter is available to sub that day.  I tell her I requested someone because her daughter is 20 w/ a little college (no degree) and is more interested in socializing than teaching.  So, I confess that I lie to her until someone else fills the job or until I can get my favorite lady to do it.

I've actually re-scheduled doctor appointments just to have this lady come, ha!

  • Here's an example of how helpful this woman is:

On a 3rd grade geography worksheet (page numbers written next to questions).  The question said:

Which baseball teams play near an ocean: Los Angelas Dodgers, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals.

It wanted 2 teams and the page in the book gave a map.

She asked me for help because she didn't know baseball teams....

Ok she really needs to go, because she's teaching geography and doesn't know that Kansas City is in the middle of the US Hmm

Or, apparently, that CA and NY are on the coasts.
  • What kills me is the map - there's a freaking map!  Even if you do suck at geography because you weren't born in America (Argentina to be precise), there was a map - a simplistic 3rd grade map...labeled...with stars.

    Deductive reasoning my friends.
