Education Advancement = Career Advancement?

I graduated with a Bachelor's in English. I am looking to find a new position that is closely related to my field. I have been working retail for the past two years and have been feeling the desire for something more.

I always told my H that I would like to one day go back for my Master's. I just wasn't sure what the concentration would be since I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my education and the job market was so thin at the time. I am thinking about approaching my H with the idea of going back to school for a Master's in Marketing. (I want to either be in publishing or public relations, I feel that this concentration would benefit both of those avenues).

My question is for those who have an advanced degree, do you think it contributed to the fact that you were looked at by potential employers? I feel like with my sole English degree, I'm not getting responses. I'm currently stuck in the nice post-grad Catch-22 of "can't get a job without experience, and can't get experience without a job."

Thoughts?

Re: Education Advancement = Career Advancement?

  • i feel im in the catch 22 as well. Right now I have my bachelors degree but am only making minimum wage. its VERY frustrating. A friend of mine applied for a job here as well and she DOES have her masters and they basically told her she was OVERqualified....ugh. I would love to go back to school but I would be screwed if after having a higher degree i didnt get a decent paying job and have to pay back even MORE than i do already for my bachelors. so i gues i dont have much advice im just kind of in the same boat.
  • I have a PhD, and the field I'm in requires an advanced degree.

I'd look at jobs you're interested in and see if an advanced degree is really required. Or try to network with people in that field and get some feedback on the advantages/disadvantages of an advanced degree.

  • Do you currently live near alot of publishing companies?

Do you work in marketing now? I only ask because i used to work at one of top 3 in NYC. I would continue to network and try helping a non-profit with updating their marketing materials..in this economy before getting a degree if you have to pay 100%

    Good luck!

  • If you don't have a lot of experince, I would wait on the advanced degree. We used to have a lady here, who had a Masters in Business, but less than a years worth of working experience. It was very hard for her to find a job, since she had lots of education and little experience, which is why she had to take a temp position to gain more experience.

Once you do find a job in your desired company, they may offer tuition reimbursement, which would then help to offset your Masters degree. You may also find that once you are in the field you might prefer to focus in a different area.
