To Paint Trim in a room or not-That is the question
I also posted this on D&R-But need all thoughts/advice
Our house is a classic New England Home built in 1903. We have the oringal dark trim in all the rooms. I am thinking of redoing our office and I would like to do the walls grey and have white/black accent pieces etc. BUT the trim is what is tripping me up.
So would it be a bad idea to have a room w/ white trim b/c it matches the room, but the rest of the house is all dark trim? It is also orignal so I feel like it would take away from the value etc?
TIA

The way life should be-

I'd have to see pictures to know for sure
One thing to keep in mind is that paint can be stripped, it can be a pain to do, but it can be done. So if you paint it, and a future owner didn't like it, they could change it back.
Another option might be to play up the trim as your black accent again the grey walls. What if you were to stain the trim a dark brown or black color? That could look really cool off a grey wall.
I used to be in the "don't paint original trim/brick/etc" camp, but we live in a 1920s era dutch colonial and somewhere along the line someone painted the trim. I love the way the white works with the dark doors and bright colors.

I personally wouldn't do it. The main part of my house has the original wood work and I love it. I do need to refinish it, as it's pretty beat up, but I just plan on staining it back to the color it is now.
I agree with pp who said to use the dark trim as part of the accents. I think it could work!
I'm in the 'keep stain on the wood' camp. We bought a new construction so all the trim is white and I wish it was wood stain. I'm also not a fan of white cabinets. So I'm bias.
But overall I don't think it would look weird if you painted the one room white and left the rest since it would tie in with the theme of that room.
I'm not sure. Our house alot of original wood trim, but some of the trim on the 1st floor is painted white. I don't mind the white, but I don't know that I would ever do it myself. Here is a pic. Windowpanes are original wood, as is the door.
