vacation days at work

so when i started this job i was told id have a week vacation time and a week sick time.....well i just found out that i cant use ANY vacation time until i've been here at least a YEAR....which really means i dont get Any! and apparently i only have 12 HOURS of sicktime to use. i SO wish i could use a vacation day this week, I work all day, everyday (like most people) AND just bought a house so every single day since last friday I have been going straight to the house to paint and clean and organize, I havent even started bringing furniture or clothes or anything over yet and im already exhausted. imjust venting but im SO TIRED. im nesting at work right now (tisk tisk i know) but all i want is to sleep just a few more hours in my bed. Yawn :O

Re: vacation days at work

  • I, too, work alot and have switched jobs around from 2010-present that it feels I have not been able to use any of my time off.  I'm also getting married and need to save up my time for the wedding/honemoon.  With that, all I can say is that I feel ur pain and to stay strong.  When you and I actually get to use our time...it'll be totally worth it! I've actually had to take a day or 2 off because I was exhausted, and just took a hit for the day.  i didn't get paid for the day, but my sanity thanked me :)
  • How did they manage to leave out the part of not being able to use it for 1 year?  That sounds totally ridiculous.  I can understand a probationary period of 30 - 90 days, but a year... SMH.

  • yea, they mentioned the 90 days...but today is actually my 100th day! i had asked my boss about it and he said i can use my sick time (i have only 12 hours of sick time) whenever i need them but that vacation i cant touch for at least another year. i had 2 interviews for another job at a different company that i think went well, so hopefully this week i'll find out if i have a new job! if i get it, it would be literally on the same road as the house i just bought and for more money than i make now. im currently driving at least 45 minutes to get to work which doesnt pay much at all. Wish Me luck!
  • At the job I just interviewed for on Monday, vacation days and sick days accrue quarterly so I guess technically I won't have any for a few months which sucks if I get sick...

They should have been clear from the beginning.

  • I just started my job two months ago. I can't take vacation for a year and there are no paid sick days at all. It sucks but the employee manual certainly spelled it out clearly. In the good old days, I would never have taken a job that had this kind of policy but now I'm just glad to have a job. My hope is that sometime soon the economy will improve enough that employers will have better benefits to compete for good workers.
  • Most places I have worked for require at least 6-12 months before you can use paid vacation time, but can you take an unpaid day off? Maybe a Friday or a Monday so you can get three days in a row...

I agree w/ this.  Any job I've ever worked clearly stated in my hiring paperwork that you got the one week of vacation AFTER you've been employed w/ them for one year.  Two weeks vaca time after 2 years, and so on.  I've only gotten sick time @ one place, and I think that started after 30 days.
