Coworker asked me how much I make...

We work together but are in different positions. I had a feeling she made less b/c she is always talking about her low pay. She also started at PT hourly (now she is FT), so that was another clue.

Today she blurted out what she made at lunch. It wasn't as low as I thought, but I still make a chunk more. I didn't say anything about my own salary, but then she asked! I tried to be polite and told her I don't like to discuss that with people, because I had a previous job where I did that and it led to bad feelings (on my part, I made less)...a true story.

Did I do the right thing? She seemed OK with it. I just knew it would be a recipe for disaster.

  • You def did the right thing! just think one day she will be in your position where someone asks her and when she is the one making more she will realize why you said what you said. She will learn
  • yes absolutely did the right thing.
  • I know that I did but I couldn't help but feel guilty as I now know what she makes! But if that was what she was hoping to happen (me tell her), I think she should have asked before telling. I just know better....and even though she might not think it, she is better off not knowing either!

  • You definitely did the right thing!  It's not even about hurt feelings; I've known  people who have gotten fired for discussing their salary with coworkers.   It's a really big deal to talk about it most places.
  • Some people have no boundaries. I would never share that info.
