s/o going green- lightbulbs
Does anyone else's CFL lightbulbs blow all.the.time? I cannot stand them! We tried them in a few lamps and they were failures. They lasted all of a few weeks. I am pretty sure I'm back to regular bulbs (they don't work in the flushmount ceiling lights we have either-- were told they are a fire risk).
Also, when they break, they have mercury in them and have to be careful cleaning it up.... which has happened several times thanks to psycho cat.
I wish they worked better! I'm hoping it's just my disaster of a house...
Re: s/o going green- lightbulbs
We've been using CFLs for many years with no problems until this year. We now have certain light fixtures that always blow quickly with a CFL. Also, when we ordered our porch ceiling light, we had to specify which type of bulb we would be using...so it makes me wonder if they only work with certain lights.
Who told you this? I'm fairly certain it's false info. :-) I did a lot of work with Efficiency Vermont and the Green team at VTB and never heard this. Are they fluorescent ones? Now, I'm curious... We use CFL's in all of our flush mount ceiling lights and have had no problems. Efficiency Maine is subsidizing much of the costs of CFL's so they are super cheap! Efficiency VT is offering them for $1 right now!
I wouldn't worry about the mercury too much. There's more in your watch battery than the light bulb. Yes, it's important to clean it up correctly (no broom or vacuum, use tape or wet paper towel), but nothing too serious. Here's a good reference.
I love that some of us are thinking more green! :-)
I think Home Depot did because they kept blowing out-- I finally asked for some guidance and was told that-- but they also weren't fitting right either- the flushmount lights would only light up on one half... it was weird (I hate those lights anyway). I have no idea which lightbulbs they were.
And yes, I'm a pro at cleaning up mercury spills now-- but at first, it was a little stressful since DH didn't know that it contained mercury.
Ok, our light is a dimmer light... and maybe Home Depot doesn't sell those kind? I have no idea.
We use them at our house and have never had an issue (knocking on wood). My dad uses them and says they blow all the time.
Odd.
I've also heard the dimmer is the issue and requires a special bulb. I've noticed our Home Depot sells the special use-with-dimmer CFLs but have no idea if they are any good. We don't have any on dimmers and have never had a problem with our regular CFLs.
all we use are CFLs. You do have to buy special ones to use with dimmers. They are much more expensive- but totally worth it.
Are you getting lots of humming with your CFL's?
