I am pretty sure that I am going to get an offer from a recent job interview. At the interview I was given an idea of the minimum pay (hourly).
Should I negotiate the offer, even if I would take the job at the minimum?
My real question is how exactly do I word the counter offer? Say they offered $1/hour and I want $2/hour. I'm looking for the actual wording I would use on the phone..."Thank you for the offer, I am excited about this opportunity..." then what?
TIA

Re: How to negotiate salary
Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the opportunity. I would like to discuss salary. I was looking for more in the range of $1.50-$2/hour.
Then see what they say.

I'm confused-are you upset that it's low, or that it's hourly? My response depends on your answer.

You really need to provide them with valid reasons to want to give you more. It's not enough just to ask for it because you want to ask for it.
So, come up with REAL reasons you think you deserve more and then phrase it accordingly..
..."Thank you for the offer, I am excited about this opportunity..."
"I was hoping that salary would be closer to X. I feel that with my background in such and such and my experience doing XYZ this salary would be more in line with my skills and what I can bring to XYZ company."
