Random questions

So the other day I was reading a book and it got me thinking about all of us and the different parts of the world we live in. It made me want to ask, what is something that is unique and specific about where you live? That you wouldn't know about it unless you lived there. It could be something about the food, sport or culture of the area you live in, or where you grew up. :)

  • Most people know that Milwaukee is the Brew city. However did you know that Milwaukee started as 2 towns: Kilbourn Town and Juneau Town, seperated by the river.

They were rivals, and their streets never lined up. So when the towns were joined, and they built the bridges they had to make them slightly crooked too make the streets line up.

  • I never fully understood the term masshole until I moved here. Otherwise, there isn't too much that's interesting around these parts.

  • Stores are closed on Sundays so you can't do any shopping.  You also can't do any yard work or wash your car.  While it is a bit annoying when you want to get stuff done, I like the reasoning behind it.  Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest and a day to spend with your family.  The Germans really value family and personal time so I don't feel bad when DH and I chill on the couch with the kitties on Sundays.

Also, if you cover asparagus when it is growing it will turn out white and taste fabulous. I live on the Spargel (asparagus) Road and during spargel season the restaurants have amazing spargel dishes, soups, etc.

    I LOVE Spargel Zeit!

I go by the spargel fields during my runs and it always makes me happy knowing what is buried in those rows of dirt.  Just a couple more weeks until the season starts!

  • I live in a very small town. Mostly everything is locally owned. We also don't have stores open on sundays except restraunts. There a a good many churches in this small town. We also have a very low crime rate. I live in the type of town where its still okay to let your kids go walking around town and ride bikes. It can be annoying at times but its nice to have the security.

  • 'Treeline' is the elevation at which trees stop growing and the vegetation changes.  It varies by region, but in Colorado it is approximately 11,500 feet.

Black bears can be black, brown, red, or blonde in color.  Brown bears are Grizzlies.  There hasn't been a Grizzly bear sighting in Colorado since 1973 (supposedly).

  • Here in Boston (and much of New England) we have lots of old-fashioned blue laws that were totally foreign to me when I moved here from the midwest.  Despite being such a progressive state in terms of things like gay marriage, it has only been very recently that one could buy liquor on Sundays here, and you still can't in many towns.

No sales tax on clothes! My friends visiting from Michigan love that.

We have state and city holidays that are unique to us and that no one else observes.

We have lots of funny colloquialisms that are used by natives of this area (mostly by people of our parents' and grandparents' generations, but I occassionally hear my husband use them) - like "bubbler" for drinking fountain.

Back in metro-Detroit, I never realized that beets on a Greek salad was unique that area.  I always thought that was standard until recently.

  • Atlanta is strange kind of city where it seems very few people are actually from Atlanta but from all over the place.

Atlanta is the only city that was burned as an act of war.

Since Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola, everyone drinks it. Typically you will be asked would you like a coke? The understanding that that Coke may not be a Coca-cola but Sprite, Dr.Pepper, or any other soda.

There are also over 150 roads with Peachtree in the title. Giving directions to people who don't live here can be hard. ;)

  • seems like PA is similar to MA...

You can't buy booze on Sunday (although a few Wine & Spirits are open for a few hours)... you also can't buy beer and wine together.  You buy Wine and Spirits at the Wine and Spirits store and Beer at the Beer Distributor, but only by the case.  You can buy 6 packs at bars that sell them, but the carry out law is no more than 2.

There is no sales tax on clothes here either.

In NJ (at the shore), I grew up learning a lot about the tides, hurricanes, wind shifts, and oceanography (took the class in HS)... it wasn't until college I realized this stuff was specific to my region/location and that other schools didn't learn about it.  We also had a surf team in HS.

I hate driving in Atlanta for this reason.

I was born in Michigan and lived there every summer in Caseville until I went to college. It makes me smile to hear about "the largest community in the thumb."
