Moms of LOs with ear infections/tubes

I'm just wondering when your pedi started having the tubes discussion.  Cam is on his 4th ear infection since Christmas.  For the last 3, he hasn't gone more than a week without being on an antibiotic.  I've had to take him to the evening clinic at his pedi's office so we haven't actually talked to his regular doc about it.  If he has any more, what can I expect?  When do you think they would refer us to an ENT?

Re: Moms of LOs with ear infections/tubes

  • Aubrey had 3 infections in 6 weeks and that is when they referred us.. The ENT didn't really want to do tubes before she turned 1 but we ended up getting them when she was 10 months old.. even after getting tubes, she has had several infections (though not as frequently) but then we at least know what is causing her fevers/fussiness (by the nasty drainage) so we don't miss work for it anymore and she isn't in nearly as much pain..

  • Oliver started getting ear infections at about 6 months and by 10 months he had 5 I think... pretty much nonstop from 6 months until we got tubes at 10 months.  He was on antibiotic for 3 months straight.  It was horrible.  I would assume that your Pedi will refer you to an ENT now... and from there the ENT will do a hearing test, check for fluid, and check the ears.  We opted for tubes right away (we went in on Nov 19th and he had tubes on Dec 3).

Oliver is having his second set of tubes put in tomorrow... not because he gets ear infections any more but because he has fluid that won't drain.  Our ENT is worried that if the fluid doesn't drain it will eat away at the ear drum and cause hearing loss.

I highly recommend Dr Young at ENT Clinic of Iowa.  He is conservative and does a great job.  He is also one of the only Pediatric ENT's that I could find.

  • I think if after this round of antibiotics I would ask about it if the pedi doesn't bring it up. I wish I would have asked about them sooner for Ella. From my experience they like to try rocephin shots first and if those don't clear it they will definitely send you.
  • I just went throught this with Gabby and we also see Dr. White - I'm guessing you still see her too?  I finally just called and talked to Teri - she counted up how many infections she had had, talked to Dr. White about it and we have our ENT appt on Monday.  If you're concerned - I would just give them a call :)

Yep, we still see her.  Good idea, I think I'll just chat with Teri since we don't go back until 9 months.  How many has Gabby had?

  • Our pedi and ent say fluid for 6 months or x amount of infections (I don't remember the number!). Reese's infections were all raging double infections that took higher order antibiotics to get rid of. One was so bad that she had to have injections of rocephin. The pedi was concerned by that and gave us the referral.

6 since the beginning of 2011 - and 5 or so last winter.  With her being our 1st, I didn't realize this was excessive until asking the Nestie Ladies.  At first I was a little irritated that I was the one bringing it up - but everytime we go she sees a different doctor and so I just chalked it up to that as I love Dr. White.  Good Luck!!

  • I also recommend Dr. Young.  He was patient with us, and gave Kellen 6 weeks to see if his fluid would get any better (and not have an ear infection in that time).  Kellen had infections from 9 months till we got the tubes at 12 months, pretty much straight.  He had the Rosephin shots as well.  The main concern was the fluid he had- his hearing test was B.A.D.  He is doing so much better with the tubes!  Glad we got them.

  • We're in the same boat. AJ has been treated for 3 infections since January, but I'm pretty sure it's just one continuous case that never goes away. I'm ready for tubes and I think I'll pursue it with his pedi at his 15 month appt. next month. I'm slightly concerned about his language development and wonder if tubes would help in that area too.
Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • Our experience is similiar to the others. Olivia had her first ear infection when she was 3 months and it was about every 3-4 weks after she would get another one. We would just be over the ear infection and another would develop. We were referred after her 5th one. We went to Dr. Greiman (love him) at Mercy ENT in Clive. She was only 8 months old. We waited 6 weeks to see if she had any more problems. Summer was starting and he wanted to see if that helped. It didn't. We saw him again and he set it up for the next week. She was 10months.

I will say after tubes, no issues whatsoever. One tube is still in there resting on her ear drum. We are taking her back in next week and he might take it out. They were very comfy in there! :)
