Books

We haven't done this for a little while, and I think it's always fun.  So...

What's the last book that you read?
On a scale of 1-5, how many stars would you give it?

What book are you reading now?
How are you liking it so far?

Re: Books

  • What's the last book that you read?  Middlesex
On a scale of 1-5, how many stars would you give it?  5 stars.  It was excellent.

What book are you reading now?  The Help
How are you liking it so far?  I just started it last night and I'm only a couple of chapters in.  So far, it's okay, although it's kind of hard to tell at this point since I just started reading it.  I am struggling a little bit with the language/writing style.  It's tripping me up because I'm not used to it.  I'm a little concerned that this book is going to be a disappointment because I have high expectations for it since everyone raves about it.  Of my five Goodreads friends who have read it, all five have given it 5 stars.  Crazy!

  • Middlesex is one of my favorites, ever.  And The Help was a little slow at first but I loved it, it picks up and I couldn't put it down!

I've been reading gardening books and photography books lately.   I need to reserve something on my TBR list soon!

  • The last fiction book I read was Judy Blume's Are You There God, it's Me, Margaret.  I found it in my in law's basement.  Such an endearing age.  You guys know it, and have read it, right?

Right now I am reading Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions.  It's for school (obviously), and the case studies are kind of blowing my mind about the possible scenarios that may come up.  It's not very well written (very repetitive), but it is eye opening.

I used to love Judy Blume books!  Summer sisters is a great "grown up" read of hers.

I haven't read it, actually.  I read a couple of other Judy Blume books growing up, but I never really got into them, so I gave up on her at the time.  I haven't read any of her books as an adult.

  • 12 year old girl struggles with developing, making new friends, and deciding to be Jewish or Christian.  Through the eyes of a 12 year old girl.  Sweet and painful to read as an adult.  Want to borrow it?

I've got The Help on my list of books to read... someday.

  • I also just finished Middlesex a week or so ago and loved it.   I'm currently in the middle of a bunch of work stuff and haven't had time to start a new "fun" book, but The Help and The Red Tent are next (I haven't decide which yet) on my TBR list.
  • GRSP -- I'm skittish of young adult books.  I haven't enjoyed the ones that I've read as an adult.  Maybe this would be different though due to the subject matter and the fact that it's a classic.

JK -- I really enjoyed The Red Tent.  Fascinating subject matter, IMO.

  • Last book I read . . . uhhhh.  Seriously I can't remember.  I read a book about the history and culture of Ireland before our trip in September and that might be the last book.

Current book:  I just picked up a Confederacy of Dunces from the library to read before NO.  I'm going to start it tonight and hopefully finish before our trip! :-)

  • I just finished reading Something Borrowed - it was ok.

I am still working on House Rules by Jodi Picoult.

  • Last book:  Millie's Fling by Jill Mansell
How I liked it:  4 stars.  It was funny, cute, quick, easy, light read.

Reading now:  Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.
How I like it:  So far so good though I'm only on chapter 3.

Both were cheap/free on my Nook.

I was going to start reading that last night too, but they wanted $12.99 for it and I'm way too cheap!  Hehe.  (I only had access to my Nook last night.)

  • I just finished "Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Backby Todd BurpoI would recommend it It was a very fast read, took my less than 2 hours. Currently I'm reading "A discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness. I'm about 7 chapters in so the ground work of the story is still being laid out.
  • What's the last book that you read?  A whole book?  I honestly don't remember.  Probably something cheesy.  I've been reading the pregnancy and childbirth book my Dr. office gave me, but I haven't read the whole thing yet.
On a scale of 1-5, how many stars would you give it? I have no idea!

What book are you reading now? Now You See Him (romantic suspense novel)
How are you liking it so far?  I'm only about 50 pages in and it's kind of boring so far.

  • I read Diary of a Mad Fat Girl for a brain break and it served its' purpose. It was a fluff novel. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads, I think. Decent but not an award winner by any means.

I downloaded The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie for our vacation. It's supposed to be good. We'll see :)

  • What's the last book that you read?  "A Soft Place to Land"
On a scale of 1-5, how many stars would you give it? Three stars, I suppose. It started out well, but kind of fizzled out, and the ending was not satisfying.

What book are you reading now? N/A. I have a few to choose from, but haven't started anything. I'm intrigued by all of the good reviews of "Middlesex," though.

  • What's the last book that you read?

Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult  It was one of my favorites by here, so probably a 5.  Her descriptions of music therapy felt very accurate to me as someone in that profession.  I've been in churches on both sides of a significant issue in the book, so that was interesting.

What book are you reading now?

I haven't chosen a next one yet.  I started two and didn't really like either, so I need to head to the library.  I do have The Last Lecture on audio book though, so that will be playing the next time I drive somewhere.
