tax refund: how'd you spend it?

Ok, time to AW what you bought (or will buy) with your tax refund, or AW how responsible you are!

Go!

Re: tax refund: how'd you spend it?

  • We're doing a little of both: 2/3 will be used to pay off one of DHs student loans. The other 1/3 will be spent on our trip to Hawaii in April.
  • DH's lease ends in October so he needs it for a down payment on a truck (hopefully not leasing again)... that's where it's going at this point.
  • We saved some and paid off some bills. Oh and I got to go to Chicago!! Best money ever spent!!
  • Ours went into our savings. So I guess in a way it will help with finishing the basement (even though we already had the money to do that). Or replenishing the savings account...how ever you want to look at it.

  • We put some to pay off the remaining balance for the cabin for our annual gold prospecting/camping trip that is in July.

Another part of it was for a CC payment for me (triple what I usually pay..horray!)

Then the rest to our DP fund.

  • We bought a new couch and put some towards bills and other little things we needed around the house. I also used some for my trip to Florida.

Meh, us too. I think it's only a couple hundred $$ but still, really not happy about it.

  • When we get it.... straight to savings. But we are in talks of doing a cruise or some kind of trip in October, the week after the 3-day...

  • I haven't done ours yet and I'm almost positive we're going to have to pay, especially to the state.  We've tried hard to minimize the damage but we'll see.

If by some act of God we get some back it's going straight into savings.

  • Part of it went to pay the retainer for my attorney, part of it went towards the Chicago trip and the rest is sitting in savings for now. I do have my eye on a new couch and chair though.....

Same for us. I guess its better than the gov't having our money interest free. Still sucks!

  • We only got about $300 back. I think we probably spent it on whatever, it was autodeposited into checking I think. At least we didn't owe this year...most years we owe $2-$3K, except last year when we got a good return b/c of the first time homebuyers' thing.

Yup. Gotta save up for that DP!

  • Its in our down payment fund, so I guess we spent it bailing ourselves out of the money we're going to lose on selling our house

If we were not moving, we would have split it between a week long trip & a fence for our yard.

ETA: who am I kidding? if we weren't moving we'd have split it between said fence & my loans.

We had to pay about $3K...due to DH drawing from his retirement to pay off loans when he switched jobs.  We thought we were going to get a hefty return this year because of having Levi.  But we ended up getting $166 from the state.  Maybe next year.

  • Most of it went to savings because we want to make sure that we will be able to survive on J's new salary. About $1500-2K will go towards re-doing our bathroom. FINALLY!!!!!

Most of it went back into our savings account to cover my tuition for this semester (I don't qualify for loans because I'm only taking 4 credit hours... you have to take 5 to qualify). The only reason we got money back is because of the Lifetime Learning credit, so it fit.

Then, we each took a little to just spend. Mine went to the Chicago trip. Money well spent!

ETA: We put our state refund (only a couple hundred dollars total) in our house maintenance savings account. The only reason we got a state refund is because Illinois did a property tax rebate to try to offset some of the income tax increase (dumb and regressive, *sigh*). We typically owe the state.

  • Per the financial experts we are in the "perfect situation" and will pretty much brake even. With our refund we can go to a nice dinner, meh. Atleast we don't owe. We did get bonuses this year which will pay for Spain. Does that count?

  • We paid off CC debt.

Before you go say how responsible we are though, I will tell you what we bought with the CC, KNOWING our refund was coming :)

    1. Week long rental of a house in Glen Arbor, MI for the first week of June this year.

    2. Season football tickets to MSU football

    3. A bit of a splurge at the Eddie Bauer and Nike outlets in Orlando

    4. And a little bit of old debt along with it.

Soooooo, yeah. We paid off FUN debt Cool

Our refund was about $2k LESS this year than last year, and apparently, we are "upper class". HAHA. We were hoping to buy a new chair for our living room, but that smaller refund didn't allow it.

  • Okay, this i'll try to keep this short...

WE had bought furniture last fall, planning on using me bonus for it, but then my mom totallyed my car, so my bonus went to the DP of the new car, so the tax refund paid off the furniture, and part went toward trip to boston, until mike gets refunded from work, and then THAT $ will go in savings...and what we had left of refund went into savings.

  • We didn't file yet, so I have no idea what will happen (since I haven't had steady FT employment, it's hard to predict).  If we do get a refund, it will go to cc debt (living expenses that we had to start charging since I couldn't get FT this semester - like heating oil) and to help us get through the summer until my new job starts in the fall and we can breathe again.

  • I have more CC debt than I'd like to admit to (oops?) between finishing the basement, buying new furniture, having to go back to Mexico...random other expenses we weren't expecting. Sigh. We have to pay in $4XX to state, so our federal refund is only about $850 after paying in to state. I'll put it all toward the credit card debt. Assuming everything goes according to plan, the CC debt will be paid off by next years tax season.

I would love to get a nice chunk back, but I had several piddly W-2s this year, so each individual one put me at the poverty level...meaning very little taxes came out of each check. 2011 will be better.

This was us last year...we owed $5K in combined fed and state. That sucked hardcore.
