Pet Food/Snacks

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to GL. I've been slowly changing our ways. My next step is for my dog. I'd like to find good food for her as well as treats. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Re: Pet Food/Snacks

  • You can start with the dog food analysis website.  http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/.  A higher rated food will have less bad stuff in it.

Home cooked food or raw food is another option.  I started feeding my dog home cooked food last winter.  I did it mainly for health reasons but I'm pleased that it's very sustainable as well.  I get organic ground chicken from a local farm that my parents have personally visited so I know the chickens aren't crammed into a small area and live a good life.  I add locally grown brown rice.  She also gets carrots, green beans, berries and squash.  She gets carrots and bits of squash for treats.  Last summer, I got veggies from the farmer's market and my dad's garden and froze the excess to use this winter.  This summer, I'm going to grow plenty of veggies so I don't have to buy any from the farmer's market.  I do add supplements that aren't local.  The food isn't cheap but she is my baby and I feel good knowing I'm giving her something extremely nutritious.  Before I switched, she had bad arthritis and was really showing her age.  She's 13 and can go for hikes and camping with us again and she acts much younger in general!  The fact that I'm supporting our local economy and sustainable agriculture is a huge bonus.

  • My dogs love carrots!  They are their favorite treats.  They get Beneful because they won't eat better food (I've tried).  They are both rescued reservation dogs, so they ate worse before the Beneful.  We do add about 1-2T of plain yogurt to their Beneful to help with gas and they love it!

  • Thank you so much! I am going to look into all these suggestions!
  • I used to feed blue buffalo but found that I got more bang for my buck with Taste of the Wild. Plus it's grain free. I now feed raw (BARF diet). I feed dehydrated beef liver treats, dehydrated beef, and dehydrated sweet potatoes.

  • Lurker poking out her head...

As my contribution, I feed my cats Authority brand dry food (sensitive system, because one of them was throwing up a lot before the switch).

I was planning to feed the same when we finally bring home a puppy, but I started reading all those raw prey-model diet sites, and holy cow! Lots of information, great on paper, probably pretty great in reality too?

Biggest concerns would be a) cat holding down food with her paws and then walking around the house with raw meat residue on her feet, and b) the amount of food a larger breed dog would need to consume per day...it seems like it would get unsustainably (for us) expensive. Open to lots of feedback!

Wife2DJ, not trying to hijack...perhaps learning more about raw diet will also help you make an informed decision about changing your dog food. Smile

  • Hi!  Good luck on your new mission!  It's life changing and really helps you to see life in a new way!

I love Celadon Road products.  They have pet friendly stuff too!  Dog treats, bedding, toys, shampoo, etc.

Organice & eco friendly products.  The treats specifically have no 'filler's which if you read up on, are often saw dusts and newspapers in many commercial dog foods and treats! (YUK!)

    Best of luck to you!

I have a 75lb Rottweiler mix and a 55lb Pit Bull. We feed prey model raw. It's actually cheaper to feed prey model raw than it is to feed a high quality kibble. Not to mention it's the only thing that helps my Pit Bull's allergies.
