Moms- Some one-year-old questions

Hi ladies

Just wanted to pick your brain about a few things. Now that Clara is one it seems life is both easier and harder at the same time. Wondering about some development/eating/schedule stuff.

1. When did your child start walking? Did you do anything to help them learn? Clara is not interested in the least. If I hold her hands to try to get her to walk with me she buckles her legs and rips her arms away so she can crawl. If she is standing against some furniture and I ask her to walk to me she THROWS her body at me instead. Maybe she's just an efficient crawler and that's why she's not interested? I'm not worried yet, just curious.

2. If you breastfed- how long did you?  Did your baby self wean or did you wean him/her? C is still nursing about 4 times a day. I don't have a problem with that since I'm home with her but it has been like this for a while and I don't see any interest in dropping a feeding.

3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready?

4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater?

5. How many teeth did your child have at age one? Clara only has three, with no signs yet of a fourth. It doesn't stop her from eating but I feel like all her friends can already chew steak.

6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc?

If she is standing against some furniture and I ask her to walk to me she THROWS her body at me instead. Maybe she's just an efficient crawler and that's why she's not interested? I'm not worried yet, just curious.  Ben didn't walk until he was about 14 months old. He showed no interest for a long time then suddenly was ready to go. Honestly, it's not considered developmentally late until they are showing no interest by 18 months, so she's fine! Just keep trying to encourage her to stand, etc. It's all you can do.2. If you breastfed- how long did you?  Did your baby self wean or did you wean him/her? C is still nursing about 4 times a day. I don't have a problem with that since I'm home with her but it has been like this for a while and I don't see any interest in dropping a feeding. I have no clue. Ben was formula fed so this is my first BFing adventure and I'm petrified. M hates bottles, may be allergic to milk, and shows no interest in dropping the boob at all. In fact she's more attached to me now than she was when she was little! I want to wean at 12 months but no clue how this will work.3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready? Ben went to 1 nap at about 11 months old! Maddy is conflicted right now - she is fighting that morning nap, or only sleeping for 20 minutes, but if she only takes one nap (like 11-1:30) she's miserable by 5:30 b/c she's tired. We're in transition here I think so no advice except just try to follow her signs. 4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater? Maddy hates food so no help with her. But Ben was a good eater at a year old - he loved veggies, loved to try new foods. At 18 months it all suddenly went down hill, see my blog for my current food hell with him. 5. How many teeth did your child have at age one? Clara only has three, with no signs yet of a fourth. It doesn't stop her from eating but I feel like all her friends can already chew steak. Maddy has 4 right now at 11 months old; I think Ben had about 6 by then, but he was a faster teether than Maddy.6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc? I spread them a little bit. At 12 months I held off on MMR and Chicken Pox, but did the other shots. THen about 30 days later we did MMR, then at his 15 month appointment we did chicken pox and hep A (I think that was it). With Maddy, our new pedi's office in NY splits them up already between 12 and 15 months so I'm comfortable going with their schedule. Our pedi in MN had too many shots at 12 months for my liking.

  • omg, liam turning 1 seems like a lifetime ago...... :(

so he started walking 3 days after his birthday. we didnt push it but we did have alot of walking toys/trucks.

i started weaning him at 1, dropped the 2 middle feedings, waited a few weeks and dropped the nighttime then 2 more weeks and dropped the morning... it worked well for me and my boobs were fine with the transition, i think doing it slowly was key.

liam is a sleeper, i would say at about 16-18 mos he went to 1 nap and he still sleeps for 3 or 4 hrs at a time.....

he is not a good eater. well he eats very few things. but he will eat alot of those things. he ate everything as a babe and now its just "yuck". it is a daily struggle for me with what to make for him and i feel like its the same 5 things over & over again.

he prob had 8 or so teeth at 1.

i do the vacc's at the dr's schedule.

DD1 walked at 15 months; DS at 11 months; DD2 at 9 months.  Really depends on the kid.

    2. If you breastfed- how long did you?  Did your baby self wean or did you wean him/her? C is still nursing about 4 times a day. I don't have a problem with that since I'm home with her but it has been like this for a while and I don't see any interest in dropping a feeding.

DD1 til 10 months when my supply dropped; DS at 15 months (he was definitely ready); DD2 is 14 months and still nurses 2x a day on weekdays; 3x a day on weekends.  We give her sippy cups of whole milk too though, so I have no doubt that she'll be ready to wean in a month or so.  I'd like to get past the cold months, plus use up the frozen breastmilk (she has one bottle a day when I'm at work, mixed with whole milk).

    3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready?

She is 14 months and still takes 2 naps a day most of the time.  DS went down to one nap around 18 months.  Just kind of knew because he was going down a little later for his first nap, and it didn't make sense to put him down again since it was so close to bedtime.

    4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater?

She eats whenever she feels like it, really.  She doesn't eat as much as she did before 1 (it was like she would never stop); but I'm not worried.  As I was saying last night, DD1 was very picky in her toddler years, but she's 15 now and pretty much eats everything & clears her plate.  So, not to worry!  As long as she is growing at a good pace, then I'm sure all is well.

    5. How many teeth did your child have at age one? Clara only has three, with no signs yet of a fourth. It doesn't stop her from eating but I feel like all her friends can already chew steak.

DD2 had 9 teeth at 1 year.  DS only had 4, I think.

    6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc?

The only shot we delayed was the Hep B at the hospital when she was born.  Other than that, she is on the pediatrician's schedule.  We did the same with DS.

  • 1. When did your child start walking? Did you do anything to help them learn? Well, Cam's 16 months and is still not walking.  Is she cruising on furniture or behind a push toy? If so, she's progressing.  The average age to start walking is 13.5 months.  It'll happen (at least that's what i tell myself daily).2. If you breastfed- how long did you?  Did your baby self wean or did you wean him/her? 8 wks so I can't really help you here.  3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready? Cam just switched to one nap last month.  She started fighting her afternoon nap more and more so we just tried to push the morning nap later.  It was a pretty quick transition for her but if we're in the car anytime after 10 she'll still fall asleep.  4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater? She eats well IF it's one of the 10 things she likes.  Meals are by far our biggest challenge.5. How many teeth did your child have at age one? HA! Cam has 2! No steak for her either.6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc?  We followed Dr. Sear alternative vaccination schedule and only got one shot at a time.

  • 1. DS started walking at about 13 months.  He was also a very fast crawler and not was not that interested in walking, but I think the push toy helped.2. Been nursing for 18 months and still going strong.  He nurses 2-4 times a day.3. Transitioned to 1 nap at about 15 months.  It's still a work in progress.  He dropped his late afternoon nap, but kept his morning nap.  I've been trying to slowly move that a bit later in the day.  He's never been a sleeper.4. The amount he eats varies week to week.  He is generally a great eater, always has been.  Although he hasn't gained any weight in the last 3 months.5. 3 or 4 teeth, can't remember now.  We would cut up the meat into very small pieces and he just gnawed on it for a second and swallow it whole.  He's got molars now and most of the time still does the same thing.6. Vaccinate as scheduled.
  • Gianna's not quite one (just a few more days :( ) but I figured I'd reply too.  My kids a crazy, active kiddo though, so we'll see how this goes.

    1. When did your child start walking? Did you do anything to help them learn? 7 months - Not kidding.  Not fun.  Thanksgiving she took her first steps - two - towards me.  She had been crawling for a month and a half and cruising for a week or two.  After she took the first ones, she steadily increased and she hasn't crawled much at all since 9 months.  Now she's climbing on EVERYTHING and it's crazy.  She always loved standing though and she wouldn't let us help her, so we didn't do anything to help her learn - she was just determined.

    2. If you breastfed- how long did you?  Did your baby self wean or did you wean him/her? Still nursing.  I pump @ work 1-2x (trying to get down to 1x currently) and she gets 3 bottles at daycare - 2 4 ounces and 1 3 ouncer, although we're working on eliminating the 2nd 4 ouncer.  She nurses in the AM when she wakes up, at night when she goes down, and once in the middle of the night (still trying to get rid of this...).  I've started just this week putting cow's milk in her bottles gradually - I'm up to .75 ounces in each bottle and plan to progressively increase until they are all BM so I don't have to pump anymore at work.  I want to get rid of the middle of the night feeding and just do the AM and late night feeding for a couple months and then we'll go from there.  Although we'll see.  I so hate pumping, but I"m so scared I'll miss nursing.  Each time I've cut out a session or tried to, G gets SUPER clingy and fussy so I've had to do it gradually.  I don't get the feeling she will self wean - she's recently discovered she can lift up my shirt and tries to self service herself if I'm around her all day - I have to refuse or she'd do mini sessions all day.

     3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready?
G keeps acting sometimes like she's ready to go down and then other days not.  She's started waking up for an hour or two at ngiht the last couple of days so we're considering shortenign the daytime naps to see if that helps her stay down.  She's never been a good sleeper though and doesn't stay down (a side effect of the crazy activity and walking early I think).

    4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater?

She eats a small breakfast at daycare around 8 - usually just a bit of a waffle, pancake, yogurt etc.  Snack at 1030 - some fruit, yogurt, or graham crackers.  Pouch of baby food (I do the Happy Baby Stage 3 or Happy Tot pouches of 4 ounces) for lunch and usually a little extra fruit or graham crackers.  Snack @ 230 - similar to the AM - just different foods usually.  Dinner when I'm home at 6 or 630 and this amount varies - sometimes nothing, sometimes a lot.  Depends on what it is.  I've been trying to get her to eat more veggies and proteins at home instead of grains and fruit which she loves.  I try to give her some of what we eat.  She goes back and forth some weeks between eating well and not eating well.  I'm currently reading the Happy Baby Guide to Organic Baby and love it's section on eating so I'm kind of trying to follow that.

    5. How many teeth did your child have at age one?  Gianna had 2 until last week.  One tooth @ 9 months, 2nd at 10.5 months.  Just last week she got her two top ones and another one on the bottom is visible, but hasn't popped through yet.  She bits and chews things well though.

    6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc?

I talked to my pedi about this at 9 months and decided to keep her on the recommended schedule since she'll only end up with 3 at her 1 year based on how we did the others - MMR, chicken pox and I can't remember the other.

If she is standing against some furniture and I ask her to walk to me she THROWS her body at me instead. Maybe she's just an efficient crawler and that's why she's not interested? I'm not worried yet, just curious. Maggie just turned 18m yesterday and as of this week I would actually label her a "walker"  She showed ZERO interest until almost 16.5/17m, but then she just took off

    3. When did you child go from two naps to one? How did you know she was ready? We are still transitioning from 2 to 1. If she sleeps a little bit later in the morning I will skip her morning nap, or if she takes a late morning nap I may skip the afternoon.  I knew she was ready when she started to refuse to sleep during her usual nap time, like in her crib for over an hour and not sleeping.

    4. How much does your child eat? If she was a good eater at one, is she still a good eater? She was a HORRIBLE eater at 1, barely ate solids at all, definitely wasn't on 3 meals a day.  That slowly got better and although she is picky in the foods she eats her quantity as gone up a huge amount and she's good eater now

    5. How many teeth did your child have at age one? Clara only has three, with no signs yet of a fourth. It doesn't stop her from eating but I feel like all her friends can already chew steak. Maggie got teeth early so she had 8  (4 top & 4 bottom), she may have even had or was working on her first set of molars at that time too.  But her cousin is a few months older and only had 2 teeth at M's birthday party

    6. What did you do about vaccinations? Do them at the same time per the doctor's schedule or spread them out, etc? We got them on time according to pedi's schedule.  I think for #2 I will space them out a bit, I just don't like her getting that much medication in one dose, I know they are safe, but it makes me nervous.
