That's just it. You didn't even know about it - b/c no one cares.
This is why I have a problem with hate crime legislation.
I do think a black man hung by a noose is a lot scarier and carries more historical symbolism than a white woman hung by a noose. I wouldn't be scared if I walked by Palin hung by a noose. I wouldn't think, "jesus, that man probably wants to do that to me because I'm a woman" whereas a black person might feel that way seeing Obama hung.
So, in that sense I understand why the Obama effigy people were arrested in that they probably created a realistic apprehension of fear among people in a way that the Palin noose did not. If it was...I don't know...some mural of Palin being gang raped or something, then I'd see how that's frightening to women and the people should be taken to task a lot more.
But it still gets a little thought-police-ish for my taste. So, I'm conflicted and really don't know how the government should handle this.
The mayor of West Hollywood did work with state and local officials to try to find a law the men were breaking, but he couldn't. A couple days ago they were going to keep it up, but I guess they eventually broke down.
I think it's disturbing, but I do get the point that we do lots of disturbing things to images of public figures for Halloween.
Yeah, I figured there was more stuff to do b/c they didn't do it on their own property, making it vandalism, no?
I also want to add that the point about doing disturbing things on halloween was made by the men in West Hollywood.
It's not perfectly fine. I've seen a lot of coverage with people condemning it. In fact, Keith Olbermann condemned it on Countdown a couple nights ago.
