So, I work for a bank, and love my job. They have known since day one that I would like to move up (I am a teller). The next step up the ladder is head teller, and we have one. She's a very nice woman, and plans on being around a while (she could retire if she wanted to).
Well, every few months they offer head teller training. While I know it might be a little while before a head teller position opens up (we only have 3 branches in this area), I would love to this training sooner rather than later. My thinking is that when/if a position opens up, I would already have the qualification of training for it. I'm not trying to take anyone's job, but think this is a great opportunity.
I have to get my head teller and market manager's approval for any training (it requires paid travel and a hotel stay). My head teller has told us tellers a thousand times that if we ever want to go to any training to let her know and she'll arrange it for us. But I feel like this is going to be a little awkward since I'd be training for her job (not specifically at our branch but in general).
So, how would you approach it?

If head teller positions are available in other branches, I don't see a conflict. You wouldn't be gunning for your head teller's job, am I correct?
I'd let the head teller know that you would like this training in the event that the position opens up at another branch and see what she says. The worst she can say is no.

Yes, that's correct. And thanks for the encouragement! I was just worried because there aren't currently any head teller positions available, I just would like to be prepared if one opens up. I don't want her to take it like I'm preparing in case her position opens up. But you're right. As long as I make it clear that it's not her position specifically that I'm after, it shouldn't be a problem.
