XP: Would you go to Mexico?

DH and I want to do an all inclusive beach vacation this summer before we get serious about TTC.  We don't want to spend tons of $, though.  I found a couple of resorts that I really am excited about.  However, DH isn't terribly comfortable about going to Mexico.  He doesn't feel that it's very safe, especially since he usually travels with his gun and obviously he can't do that.

I think that if we take a resort shuttle from the airport to the resort (which is only 12 miles) and just stay there we should be okay.   So...

Re: XP: Would you go to Mexico?

  • I voted no.

The only reason (because honestly, I have done close to zero research into what is happening) is that I'm a scaredy cat -- and it just doesn't seem worth it.

If you're wanting a beach vacation, we loved our trip to Aruba - and it wasn't (too) crazy expensive.

  • I voted no.  I just can't stop thinking about the couple that was on vacation with her husband when her husband was killed and they still can't find his body.  I just don't think it's worth it.  I love me some Mexico time, I just don't think it is worth it right now.

  • I have read/heard about people being in all inclusive resorts and being taken from being on the beach just a little ways away from the actual resort...Mexico definitely doesn't seem to be worth the risk.  What about Jamaica??

  • I voted yes that I would go, but stay on the resort. When I went (although it was 4 years ago), our travel agent basically just told us as long as we stay with the people associated with the resorts we would be fine. Just be smart, for example if you were to go into town, don't just take some random taxi, book it through the hotel. And same with the shuttle from the airport. I booked the vacation through Funjet and they had their own shuttle and the workers were all in uniform at the airport so they couldn't be missed.

I will also add that I'm one that doesn't worry too much about that kinda stuff (even though I probably should). There are crazies everywhere even here at home.

  • The US State Department does have a travel warning in place for Mexico. Here's part of it:

"Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major drug trafficking routes. Nevertheless, crime and violence are serious problems. While most victims of violence are Mexican citizens associated with criminal activity, the security situation poses serious risks for U.S. citizens as well."

Honestly, for me, I'd rather be safe than sorry.  Violence in Mexico is increasing on a near-daily basis.  I mean, Mexicao is a place where Immigrations & Customs officials are being killed in broad daylight near the border so the bad guys can steal their armored cars. I know resorts are different from Juarez, but I still wouldn't want to take my chances.

  • Thanks for the input.  I think we're going to look into other destinations.  I guess I just didn't realize that it had gotten so bad in so many places.  (I always knew some areas were dangerous but I just thought the "touristy" places were ok.) I'd much rather either pay more or stay for fewer days than have a disaster.

  • We're planning a similar trip (one last pre-TTC vacation) this summer. DH vetoed Mexico (I was willing, but he said he isn't willing to take the risk of me going there, especially considering I'm not very street savvy). We were thinking Jamaica, as it looks to be the next most affordable, but apparently they're having some inner turmoil as well. We're not sure where we'll end up, but Mexico is his one firm no.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.
