Men, Wedding rings and Prince William

So, the big news about the Royal Wedding for this week is that Prince William will not have a wedding ring. A matter of personal preference that he and his fiancee' have agreed upon.

What are your thoughts on it?  An article I read yesterday said that wedding rings for men are relatively recent things (since WWII), but that there is a trend these days away from it. Really?

Also - I get not wearing a wedding ring - but not having one at all? What happens during that part of the ceremony when you are supposed to EXCHANGE rings?  Call me old-fashioned, but that one-sided element of the ceremony seems odd. To me, a wedding is all about mirroring vows - the bride and groom make the exact same level and showing of committment.

DH does not wear a ring. He has one, but he doesn't wear it as he says it interferes wtih his guitar playing. It used to bug me as I felt like he wasn't making the same public declaration that I was. But now, after five years, I'm used to it and it seems odd when he does wear his ring. He will, however, wear it for important occassions or if I make a big fuss, but it has been months since he last wore it and I'm not even sure he knows where it is!

  • Too bad the title of this post can't be:

Men, Wedding rings and Prince Albert.

Now that would liven up this dead board on a Friday!! Surprise

  • Neither of my parents wear their rings (although they do have them).  My mom worked in a hospital radiology department her whole life and frequently banged her ring against things in the dark room and almost lost her diamond several times.  So she stopped wearing hers.  My dad is a carpenter and can't wear his for safety reasons (it can get caught and he could lose his finger).  I don't think it ever bothered them that they didn't wear the rings.

I'm not sure how I would feel about not having one at all though.

  • hmmm, i like seeing it on lars' hand but i don't think it would bother me much if he didn't wear it. i know he's married, he knows he's married. that's all that matters to me i guess.
  • My Grandpa had one for a long time (got stolen when i was very young) but he never wore it because he was a plumber and couldn't for safety reasons so he never replaced it.

I guess if DH wanted to forgo it, I wouldn't care.  If a sleazebucket wanted to forgo it, I'd care but then again I wouldn't be married to him to begin with.  I'm very anti-sleaze.  :-P

  • I think it's a matter of personal preference whether or not a person wear his or her wedding ring on a regular basis. I do think he should have one so that they can do the exchange of rings and because of what it symbolizes. A one-sided ring giving/wearing makes it seems as though he's "tagging" his wife as his, and that just doesn't sit right with me. Why should she have to be tagged (granted, I wouldn't mind wearing the rings she's probably gonna get!), but he shouldn't?
  • I think it's weird that he is not going to have one at all, but I guess you could chalk it up to personal preference. I agree that it is more the symbolism behind the ring, and it is going to be weird in the ceremony when he gives her her ring, and she gives him nothing.  Or maybe they'll do something completely different... I could care less if someone else wants to wear one or not, if the people in the relationship don't care, then I don't either. Also, it's Prince Harry....it's not like people aren't going to know he's married! Stick out tongue

I think it would bother me if Randy didn't want to wear his, but it definitely wouldn't makes us any less married.  He always wears his and likes it, so it doesn't matter anyway.

    LOL.  Thanks for that!

  • I do think it's odd that Prince William wouldn't exchange or have a wedding band at all. H always wears his and I like that he does, but I wouldn't be totally bothered if he didn't. I would've been bothered if he hadn't wanted a band when we got married.

My DH didn't want to wear a ring when we got married, but now he wears it most of the time.  He takes it off when he is doing labor intesive work or when he is just lounging around the house.  He still doesn't love the feel of it on his hand and now I really don't care if he wears it.

  • It bugs me when DH forgets to wear his.  Other than him though I don't care what people do.

I really don't care for tattoos as wedding rings, but it's not my finger so oh well.  And I normally don't dig diamonds in men's bands but it's all about personal preference.  So....I guess I have some opinions but they really don't keep me up at night if someone has something I don't care for.  :-)

I agree with Bri...if anyone in the world doesn't know William is married then they are living under a rock.  :-)

OMG...I just realized I said Harry...haha!  I seriously have been having a lot of these moments lately, I hope I'm not losing my mind!

  • I think it's a little odd/non-traditional... but to be honest, Joe and I forget to wear our rings pretty frequently... Embarrassed We always joke that one of us isn't married on the day that we forget to wear our rings, but it's not that big of a deal to either of us. What bothers me more than one of us forgetting is when Joe takes his ring off and LEAVES it in the shower!! I'm so nervous that it's going to fall down the drain and we'll have to remove the trap to get it out.
