etsy dresses

why are they so expensive?  Pam's post prompted me to look for something for Paige to wear for her party and i found a cute simple A line dress and it was $34 granted she could most likely wear it again but i consider that expensive for a toddlers dress.  It looks super easy to make if i knew the first thing about sewing.

Re: etsy dresses

  • I do sew dresses and outfits for friends but I don't sell on etsy right now.  I have many friends who do.  Items on etsy can be expensive for many reasons.

it depends on the fabric you choose.  Fabric can range anywhere from $4/yard to $10/yard.  An aline can take at least a yard, depending on size and can take 2 yards if it is fully reversible.  Add in other notions (thread, buttons, any trims) and it adds up quickly.

Also you need to take into account the seamstresses time.   A simple aline can take an hour or two to make from start to finish (tracing patterns, cutting fabric, sewing, finishing touches, shipping).  The person should be paid for their time fairly.

Also there are etsy fees and paypal fees to consider.  Those come out of your payment too.

  • The work involved is probably more than you'd expect.

  • Handmade vs. Assembly line.

  • That's a very fair price in my opinion.  I just bought Mel a custom dress of of Etsy and it was $30.  I thought that was a steal!

The cost of materials adds up.  Just making hair accessories I've seen it.  And of course, the most expensive part is their time.  A sculpted clippie may not cost a whole lot to make, but they take a whole lot longer than a regular lined clippie, so I charge accordingly.  And as a daughter of a former seamstress...it can take a while to make clothing.  My Mom made a lot of our clothes and she put a lot of time into it.

  • A friend of a friend just started her own business with some others making customized clothes and dresses for babies, etc.  I have no idea what they are charging and are working their way to Etsy (their website isn't working yet) but if you wanted to check them out they have a FB page:  http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000093957874#!/pages/Lavender-Ladybugs/149896551741684

Again, no clue on their pricing or even what is reasonable lol...but didn't know if it was worth looking into for you, Renee.

  • i spent about $30 for milas strawberry shortcake dress and $20 for islas lemon shirt for milas party. i think its expensive ( i buy a lot of target and shop sales only) but it was for her birthday and she can wear it again- and she loved it! so... i guess its not that bad!
