Does anyone have a decent garden? Last year was my first attempt, and it did not go so well. I think I planted too late, and my soil is not fantastic. The herbs I grew were wonderful (basil, mint, and cilantro.) The tomatoes never really got red. In any case I am going to try again this year, and would love to hear any advice.

Ha ha ha. I know what you mean. I did the same every year until last year, and then I was not successful. I am going to keep trying though!

Sun sun sun has been the biggest factor for us. We planted way too late last year, but we still got a ton of tomatoes. This year I'm all spreadsheeted out and ready. I've even got all the inside seed starting stuff, which I'm sure will be a supreme failure due to my laziness, but I'm going to attempt anyway. I think it was also really wet last year...I'm going to try to do more vertical gardening with the zukes and cukes and see if that cuts down on the slug fest.

If you think your soil is week add horse manure for veggies and lobster compost for your flowers. You can use manure on everything... but if you add the lobster compost for the veggies you'll get way more foliage than veggies/fruit. You can get the lobster compost/manure at your local gardening specialty store but there's also a great company on the North Shore that makes it locally (can't remember the name).

Thanks so much! Our soil is sandy. Last year I bought a ton of good soil for the garden, and then added my own chicken poop. I am wondering if I just didn't buy enough good soil. There is a farm down the road so I can get my hands on horse manure easily. I will have to look into the lobster compost. Thanks!

I love gardening, and when I lived in NH I just planted in the backyard and everything grew with very little work. Last year I tried container gardening in my small city backyard and it was quite the opposite. I know friends who have used lasagna gardening, which helps to build up your soil and is quite easy once it is set up. You can look it up online or there is a book. Good luck!
