Tips for cleaning all tile floor house?

My new husband and I just moved into our first house together (rental, we're military and will be moving a lot, no need to buy now) and it's nothing but tile floor! At first I was so excited about this, because we have two dogs and a backyard, so no carpet stains from mud and dirt, and no worries about having to replace carpet when we leave!

However, no matter how much I vacuum on the "bare floor" setting, Swiffer, or even Swiffer vac, I feel like there is always dirt that I can feel on the floor when I walk barefoot! I'll admit, I'm a bit of a neat freak and itt drives me crazy! I'm only working part time nights right now, so during the day before I do any errands, dog park visits, or work outs, I do a quick vacuum or Swiffer vacc of the floors, hoping this would help the constant dirt feeling go away, but I feel like it's inevitable!

Am I doing something wrong??? I've thought maybe my vacuum or Swiffer vacc aren't picking up everything, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Any recommendations on hard floor cleaners, or even techniques to keeping the gritty dirt feeling to minimum???? We've bought on area rug so far, and that of course helps "trap" some of the dirt, haha and it's vacuumed daily as well.

I imagined my life without my dogs once...it was the worst 30 seconds of my life.

  • There will ALWAYS be "dirt" on the tile.  We have HW floors throughout and it's the same way.  I am a total neat freak and have two shedding dogs.  Just vaccum once a day and get a dust mop.  It's all you can do.  Try to make yourself feel better by thinking about how filthy carpeting is (b/c seriously...do you KNOW how dirty carpet is? the vaccum NEVER gets up all the dirt).
  • Our entire lower level is ceramic tile.  I wash it on my hand and knees with vinegar and water.  It's really not as bad as it sounds, and the floor feels so clean afterward!

  • Get a steam mop. They work great on tile floors. I have a Haan and love it!

Soooo true! Hahaha thanks for helping me look at the bright side! I'll keep up with the vacuuming everyday, and we're registered for a hard floor steam cleaner, so hopefully it'll come through, haha. If not I'll prolly end up getting it anyway since I've heard such good things about them on this sight. I've gotten on my hands and knees for smaller rooms, but our house is about 2,000 sqft and I dunno if I can scrub that much tile on hands and knees, haha. But I never knew about the vinegar mixture, I'll try that out in the smaller rooms like the bathroom and kitchen that I hand scrub!

    Thanks everyone!!!

  • our entire house is wood floors and tile floors. i know exactly what you are going through!!! we got a roomba for christmas and have it clean the living room/kitchen 3 days a week and it makes a world of difference.  i also throw it in the other rooms one or two evenings a week and it keeps them clean too.

i have a steam mop and use that once a week and it helps a lot too.

     good luck!

  • Our downstairs is all tile and hardwood, and we also have two dogs so I know where you're coming from!! I got a roomba for Christmas, and I love it. I run it daily. I will also occasionally sweep or dust mop (like a swiffer but a washable microfiber cloth). I try to mop a couple times a week. I have a steam mop -- Eureka Enviro Steamer. I love it!! One tank of water lasts about 15 minutes, and I can do all my tile in that amount of time.

  • My friend has tile flooring and bought a Scooba (it's like roomba but it mops).
  • I use a steam mop, and I add a little bit of bleach. But if you have kids or pets in the house, wait until they are gone and use a mask since you are making a steam out of the bleach.
