So my DH almost caught the house on fire earlier this week! Was heating up a wok with a bit of oil in it then walked away to put something away in the bathroom by the time he got back the whole pan was on fire, flames up to the ceiling. It was fricking terrifying! The dogs all freaked out, one pissed herself! Terrible.
Anywho he was able to get the pan to the sink and turn on the water but we didn't have a fire extinguisher... what type should I get? Where do you keep yours for easy access?
Re: just a suggestion
Aaaahhhhh! You do NOT put water on a grease fire! You could have spread the flame all over. He is so lucky he didn't get hurt! Next time (hopefully there won't be a next time) cover the pan with a lid or dump baking soda in to kill the flame.
Anyway, get an ABC extinguisher. It will cover trash type, liquid and electrical fires. I keep mine in a cupboard near the stove.
Thanks for the reminders.
We rarely fry or saute with oil, so it was kind of out of my mind. When we did use hot oil, I got out a cookie sheet right along with the pan. That way if there was a fire in the pan, I could slide the cookie sheet over the pan and cut off the fire.
We also have a fire extinguisher in the office with all the computers and electronics.
i keep our fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink...and another in the utility closet.
we never fry things either, but in college once we decided to try to make onion rings...had a big batch of oil heating up and all of a sudden it caught fire!!! dumb college kids we poured water on it and the fire splattered all over the kitchen! we pulled out the extinguisher but for a minute i thought we were going to burn down the entire apt complex! there were smoke marks all over the kitchen (ceiling and everything). we did our best to clean it all up and didn't tell dh's roommates. several months later we were eating breakfast and hear from the kitchen one roommate asking the other if the ceilings were always that gross and they decided that yes - the apt complex was just that gross :-)
ya, I guess when you have flames up to the ceiling your not really thinking about it! I was bust getting ready to put the leads on the dogs, just glad he was able to get it to the sink so it wouldn't catch the half wall behind the stove on fire, too...
