my ILs support that constitutional amendment about the sales tax.
Re: elizabeth81
Bleh...
Honestly, it doesn't surprise me. No one I've talked to seems to understand that this amendment completely usurps the legislature's responsibilities. Or care...
I would be really frustrated about that too. Actually I am b/c we have a constitutional issue on our ballot too. I get frustrated in general b/c the proposals never get enough media attention and scrutiny.
In MI we have a constitutional amendment proposal for embryonic stem cell research (in favor of it). But embryonic stem cell research is already legal in MI. This new proposal enshrines it in the constitution of all places and then exempts it from state & local regulation. But people don't want to talk about that. They just see "stem cell" and think "I want cures so I guess I'll vote yes."
I know what you mean. It's like here, people are like "I like clean air & water... the arts don't have enough funding... why wouldn't you vote yes?"
I'm doing my best to convince everyone I know why this is a bad idea. It's causing some problems because most people I hang with are in the legal profession and don't take too kindly to constitutional amendments of any sort, so they're already against it. Or, they're they type of Republican that automatically votes no to anything regarding taxes (seriously - one of my closest and dearest friends honestly believes the only taxes she should have to pay are for the services she personally uses). So, that leaves my parents and ILs.

You just perfectly summed up the way my ILs think about taxes. Doesn't matter how much the new tax is, the way it's implemented or the current funding. I think more people need to take a civics class. We have legislatures for a reason.
