Letter of resignation

Yay, I got a new job!!  Sounds like it'll be much better and it's only 12 minutes from my house!!

So now I have to write a letter of resignation.  I hate doing things like this.  Can anyone help me with some nice wording?  Thanks.

  • Congrats!

I would just keep the letter nice and short.  Let them know you are leaving effective X date, provide contact information should they need to send you anything, and thank them.

  • Thank you.

So do I just hand the letter to my boss?  Offer a little explanation when I give it to her?  This is going to be awkward. :/

  • Depending on the size of your company, I'd have one copy for my boss, and one for the HR department, that may not be necessary - especially if you work in a smaller company.

I'd keep it simple, thank your boss for the growth opportunity, etc.  Always go out giving the best impression as possible.  A lot of companies will only verify your employment (won't give a good or bad recommendation, because they fear legal action about defamation of character) but people do talk in their work networks - and you want to leave a good impression - for the future.

  • Thanks.  It is a small company.  My boss also handles the HR related things.
