Hypothetical Question

Let's say you were to get into an accident which left you perfectly healthy; except that you'd either be blind or deaf...which would you prefer and what's your reasoning?

(PS- I hope this isn't an inappropriate question; if anyone finds it offensive I can DD)

Re: Hypothetical Question

  • That would be a tough one... but I think I would rather be deaf... I do not think I could function as a blind person... I hate even closing my eyes in the shower to rinse out shampoo and wash my face, it just freaks me out, and I imagine spiders coming down from the ceiling, or a stranger breaking in, ect.... I have a way too active imagination!

  • Interesting question....our anatomy teacher has half of her class blindfolded for the day today and the other half with ear plugs, while I question how much this teaches about anatomy, it does give the kids an appreciation of their senses.

To answer the question I would rather be deaf I guess.  I don't think either group has it any easier than the other though.

  • Before I had my daughter Hannah, I would have said blind, because I would hate living without music.  But now, I would prefer to be deaf, because I've seen the rich and varied culture of its own that lives in the deaf community, and besides, to not be able to see what Hannah was saying to me would kill me.
  • I think I would rather be deaf (not that either one would be easier) but I really couldnt imagine not being able to see Logans smile or not being able to take pictures.

  • I'd rather be deaf.  Although both would be very hard, I feel like being blind would be so much harder on me.  I just finished reading this auto-biography called "If you could see what I hear" about a blind man, and the challenges he faced were so sad.  I think I'd be ok without ever hearing music again but I would not be ok without ever seeing a kittens face or a flower again.

  • I think I would rather be blind.  I would really miss being able to play my instruments, but my main instrument is my voice and I could learn my music by listening.  I could not bear letting go of listening to music either.

  • Originally I thought I'd rather be blind so that I could still hear things and people's voices...but after reading all of your reasons; I think I'd rather be deaf.
  • I guess I would have to say deaf, we have a deaf student in my school and while she isn't all that well adjusted, her interpreter is also deaf and seems very well adjusted...plus if I were deaf I wouldn't hear the neighbor kids!  It would be very hard though, my husband and I are both musical people...I couldn't imagine never hearing him play trumpet again!

  • I had to think about this since Hannah posted the question because I honestly had no idea what I would choose. I have decided that I would choose to be deaf, I think that it would be extremely difficult either way, but I would much rather be able to see all of the amazingly wonderful things around me. I would still be able to communicate with my family through sign language and woulnd't miss seeing everything going on around me.

I think that we all take things for granted and sight and hearing are definitely two things that most people take for granted.

Erin WD-I don't know your daughter or much about her, but just hearing all of her accomplishments amazes me. What an amazing person that you have raised!!
