Should I take this job? Old job hiring me back

I've been in this job for 10 years. (2000-2010) I have been laid off 3 times. Each time, they hire me back. The first time, it was one month. The second time, it was 3 months and I had a baby and got to spend extra time being a SAHM. This last time, it has been over a year. They have just restructured and they need another person back. Should I take this job?

 Pros and cons

Pros - money. It pays $22.50 an hour.

It will take the burden off my husband and we won't have to worry about making ends meet so much.

We will be able to refi the house (couldn't before because we weren't making enough $$) and get to a point where we could pay it off somewhere in 10-15 years.

We could pay off our Home Equity Line of Credit loan.

I know the people, I have day care set up, my kids have done this before. It's an easy (yet not challenging) job.

I need to get out of the house and use my skills and that will do that, and I can say I was employed with this company till the present and it won't look like I've been unemployed for over a year.

 Cons

I hate it. When I left last year, I said I would never go back. But because I am at home with a less than 2 year old and a 4 year old, this makes it difficult to look for work. So, I haven't found anything I really want. But I don't really want this. Going back to this job is a huge swallow my pride moment.

This is the first full time job I ever have had and I need to do something else with my life besides this job.

Advice, please if you've stayed here this long.

I would probably go back for a little bit for this reason alone, with the plan of continuing to look for something else.  It gets more difficult to be hired as this employment gap grows longer.  Continuous employment makes you more marketable.

You can continue to look for other opportunities if you take this job, and at least you'll have some extra income in the interim.

  • what exactly do you hate about it?
  • I would take the job AND actively look for a new one while I was there.  People are much more willing to hire someone who is already working.

  • Take those financial items you listed and make them your to do list.  As you go back to getting paid, cross each one off as you hit it.  Once the list is done, quit.

It's not a particularly challenging job. They have laid me off 3 times. I started at $15/hr, then went up to $28, then down to $25, then up to $28, then down to $25, Then down to $22.50. The hours are not usually stable, which is why several people were laid off and rehired. There's not much room for advancement.

If it were me, I would take the job and also continue looking for other opportunities. Like PP said, I have always found it easier to get a job when I have a job.

Based on your cons, it sounds like you're making half-hearted efforts to find a different job, and now that this has come back to you you're reluctant because you know you don't want it, but you've never really put forth the effort needed to find something else, so it's an easy out-for the second time, apparently.  What I'm reading is that you're unhappy and dissatisfied with this job.  I'd reject it (assuming you're not in dire financial straits) but also FINALLY give yourself adequate time and tools to make a serious effort to look for something more stable and satisfying.  Good luck!

I am a SAH mom looking to re-enter the work force.  I have been home for 5 years.  It has been REALLY tough looking for a job.  Places that are willing to interview me expect me to work at 1/3 less than what I was making when I stopped working.  I never expected to make the same salary as people who have been working and never stopped - but c'mon, this is rediculous!  I am looking at taking svck-y jobs at LESS than what I earned before.  At least your old job will pay you competitively!!!

If you plan to eventually work, then I would take this job.  Heck, they may lay you off again in a year or two, in which case you can collect unemployment while you stay with your kids and look for a new job!  And, it's MUCH easier to find a new job while you have a job.  You don't have to worry about phone interviews with a baby crying in the background or toddler expecting all of your attention!

This is just my advice.  Take it with a grain of salt from someone who took off to be SAH, and is now having a difficult time finding full-time employment.

    I agree with this!

  • I would go back to your old job.  Then you have child care lined up, etc.

It is MUCH easier to find a job when you have a job.  In this area, employers are posting jobs "for currently employeed candidates only."  SO unfair!

You can always have a great excuse when you interview: "My job has a lot of instability.  I have been laid off and re-hired.  Obviously, they like me, or they wouldn't hire me back, when business picks up, but I need more stability."
