Help me out, photography diva.  We're looking into buying a new lens before our trip to Vietnam in 2 weeks.  We're deciding between 2:

-Canon 50mm f/1.8 @ $80

-Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 @ $320

Right so obviously there's a huge price difference... although I could negotiate either of them down, they love that sh!t here.  I can't get both but can't decide between them.  The Tamron would replace the kit lens, which I'm pretty sick of TBH, and I think may be a good thing if I'm shooting landscapes etc. in 'Nam.  However, I love the idea of a prime lens.  I know you were considering the 1.8 but went with the 1.4 but I think the functionality is pretty similar so I wanted to get your take on the prime lens in general.  Do you think it would be silly to get that before a trip where I'm going to be mostly outdoors and shooting landscapes/architecture?  Or should I put the cash towards the nicer all-purpose lens?  The Canon just takes such pretty macro shots it's hard to resist....

Basically I need you to make a decision for me.  Kthxbai.

  • eeeks, that's a really tough decision. fact is, I LOVE my nifty fifty. it's wonderful for those detail shots, but it takes a lot of practice to get the hang of not using a zoom lens. it's easily become my favorite lens in my bag, if only for the fact that it's so challenging and I feel like I'm actually working to get good shots.

honestly, I think the 28-75mm would be a good fit for you guys as well being that you travel a lot and you'll want that extra 25mm of zoom capability. but then again, the zoom lens isn't a huge difference in actual distance compared to the 50mm.

damnit, I don't know. I can only speak from experience with owning the 50mm, and I absolutely love it. you seem to take a lot of detail shots too, so if you add that to your collection and bring along your zoom lens as well (you have a 55-250, right?), you should be set.

  • Yeah that's what I'm thinking... I might as well expand my capabilities a little bit with a different type of lens before upgrading the kit lens (which will work in the meantime and isn't terrible by any means, the Tamron is just so much better).  And yes, we have the 55-250 zoom, so I use that a lot of the time as well.

Okay.  Done.  I'll get the 50.  Thanks woman!

  • Yeah... for me, it's important to have a good zoom lens, a good "regular lens" (aka your kit lens) and then a good detail shot lens... I think if you get the 50, you'll have all of those things. I just got a 55-250mm for Christmas, and I'm loving playing around with it!

Make sure you get tons of practice with the 50mm! it is SO weird shooting with that in comparison to a zoom lens, but I love being able to control the aperature and the focus. hard to figure out, but once you get that good shot, you'll be hooked!
