beach vacations

If you could take a beach vacation to anywhere, where would you go? We are not normally beach people, but DH really wants to go on a relaxing vacation, maybe at the end of the summer. TIA!

Re: beach vacations

  • Fiji would be my #1. for the money, we would return to Aruba in a hot second.
  • We've been to LOTS of beaches.

Do you have a budget?  In the US or outside?

For $3-5k you can go to the Sandals resorts for about 5 nights.  The Royal Bahamian is amazing and i'd go back in no time.  We're thinking of going again this summer but we can't decide between the beach or London...I know crazy difference there.

For closer to $10k there's always Hawaii, but it can get more than that quick.

I really like Hilton Head, NC.  I also like California beaches.  If you like to stay in the country.

Stay away from Mexico...I have some horror stories of near resorts lately from natives.

  • Ditto the rec for Hilton Head, SC. I also love the Outer Banks in NC.

We went to Maui and loved it. With all the activities we planned, we didn't get much beach time in though.

Ha, yes SC not NC for Hilton Head :)

  • The USVI and Dominican Republic were fantastic.. they're both relatively short flights and easy to get to (no passport for the USVI!) and very safe and secure feeling.  The DR had the best feeling sand of anywhere I've ever been, oddly enough. Totally didn't expect that!  They both had that awesome Caribbean blue ocean and pretty affordable excursions to get out in the water and snorkel and stuff like that.
  • Watching this thread bc DH has promised me a beach vacation soon but we're already taking a big Europe trip this summer (plus there aren't really many good times I can take off work right now).  I have no idea where to go either!  My friend who is a scuba instructor says to go to the Caymans.

  • We are going to Cocoa Beach/Cape Canavaral in July and I can't wait. It's not as fancy as the places in PP, but flights are much cheaper, it's super safe, not super touristy, a lot cheaper to stay and eat and the National Seashore is beautiful. When we get sunburnt, we will take a day to go into Orlando and check out one of the theme parks. I'm also thinking we might go to NASA one of the days. When I went a few years back the NASA tour was much more interesting than I expected.
  • A good friend of mine goes to Seaside, in Florida, every summer and loves it.  Her family rents a house, rides everywhere on rented bikes, and just relaxes for a week.

  • Thanks for the ideas - keep them coming! Beaches were just not really on our radar before. We don't even have a budget in mind. We are pretty interested in going to the Caribbean. They are shorter flights and we won't get jet lag, which is great. Right now we are looking at the Turks and Caicos - has anyone been?

  • We honeymooned on Grand Cayman and it was awesome!  We stayed on the East end of the island so there weren't many people.  It was so relaxing.  :)

I'm also watching this thread.  We want to do the same thing this summer so now that I don't want to go to Mexico I'm looking for recs too.

  • we went to puerto rico last thanksgiving, and that was pretty easy planning. plenty of flights there without too many connections (even jetblue flies there) and you don't need a passport.

Ooohh!  One of my former co-workers went to Turks and Caicos a couple of years ago and said it was one of her favorite vacations.  They stayed at one of the child-free all-inclusive resorts (don't remember which, she and her husband were there for his work and left their kids at home).

this has been on my to-do list for years!  my parents swear by club med and apparently the one at T&C is one of the best.  that was a few years ago though...I was supposed to go with a girlfriend of mine and she bailed right before we were going to book it.  sniff;(
