Lilac bushes

I have two lilac bushes, this will be there 4th summer, and have never gotten lilacs. This year they have all there leaves and no sign of flowers.  One is in full sun and one in partial sun.  What am I doing wrong?  The bushes look wonderful, grown a lot, very healthy, just no lilacs.

Re: Lilac bushes

  • Lilac bushes take a few years before they will bloom.  My parents' bushes took 3 years before they had small blooms and they started out with some decent size bushes.  If you started with a twig or very small plant it might take longer.  You haven't pruned these at all have you?
  • When are you pruning them? Lilacs form their buds the previous summer, so you want to make sure to prune them right after they bloom. If you wait and prune them at the end of the summer or early in the spring, then you will cut off the buds and they won't bloom. If you are pruning them at the right time (or not at all), then I don't know.
