Was I wrong? Restaurant Ettiqute/Service (kinda long!)

Hi Ladies,

So Marcos and I went to Maine for the wkend and got back yesterday afternoon.  Since it was also his birthday, we went to dinner at a local restaurant, which we have been many times w/o issue.

We walked in, got sat by the hostess.  E was a little antsy and excited because it was Marcos' bday.  We waited about 10 min, watched another party walk in, get drinks, bread etc before anyone had even said hello to us.  So the hostess come back in and I ask if there is a kids menu, because I do not see it in the reg. menu.  She mentions there is, but ask the waitress and she will list them for you.

Finally, a waitress comes and here starts our dialogue.

W: Hi my name is R, I will be your waitress. Sorry for the wait, they triple sat me (rolls her eyes).  Can I take your drink order?

Me:  Yes, and we are ready to order as well.  Can you tell me what you have for kids menu, I don't see anything listed.

W: Well, we really don't have a kids menu (umm hostess just told me you did).  What I can do is pasta with a meatball. Linquine or Penne.

Me: Do you offer anything else? Chicken tenders and fries perhaps?

W: Oh yeah we have those too.

Me: Ok, well Can I have that for the little guy, X for me and X for Marcos.

W:  Ok, will be back w/your salads and drinks.

Fast forward to about 20 min later

W: Here are your dinners (only Marcos' and mine) can I get you anything else?

Me: How about the kids meal?

W: Oh um ahh um oh ok.  Let me check on that.

Me: Ok (pissed as she walks away) wait...wait...wait... 10 min later

W: Hi here is your kids meal Spaghetti w.Meatball, sorry it was a kitchen error (um no you look like you forgot).

Me:  I ordered chicken tenders and fries?

W: Oh, um that's right I will get that right out for you.

Me: Ok (pissed off now but still being nice)

W: Here is your chicken kids meal.  Sorry the kitchen made an error.  (Marcos is fuming at this point because poor Elijah was starving, but would not eat any of our dinner)

Fast forward about 10 min

Me: Can you please wrap this food up, our son won't eat now.  He is 3 and already a bit riled up.

W: Ok

W: Here is your food and bill.  Here is where I corrected I took off the Spaghetti and replaced w/ the chicken.

Me: I honestly don't think I should have to pay for the kids meal since t here were 2 mistakes, and my husband and I were 3/4 way done when our sons food got here.

W: Well you all looked like you were eating together for me (poor Marcos is about to blow a gasket!).

Me: Regardless, we had to wait a really long time for his food.

W: Well there is no manager here to take it off the bill for you, I guess I will have to pay for it myself.

Me: Well then. (now I am pissed, who are you to talk to a customer that way). Marcos got up and walked out with Elijah .

I follow her to the bar area where she is fixing the bill.  She bring it back and says to me

W: Here is the corrected bill, I took off the chicken.  It was a kitchen error, don't shoot the messenger.

Me: Ok thank you.  (I also now am pissed and left her no tip).

What are your thoughts?  Should I call a manager today and let them know how  rude she was? Was I wrong in what I said?  Should I have asked for the kids meal for free?

Thansk!!!

Re: Was I wrong? Restaurant Ettiqute/Service (kinda long!)

  • having done this for 1/2 my life that is rediculous. i would call. it cant hurt. ppl call over waaaaay less things just to look for something to *** about. i also find it hard to believe there was no one in charge, even if it wasnt a mgr there should of been someone.  granted mistakes happen, but there is a way to handle them and this was not one of them.

  • I think you were completely right to say something. In my opinion it should have been taken off your bill w/o having to have asked. I would def. give them a call.
  • I think you should call, obviously this girl should not be a waitress.  There had to be someone in charge, I can't imagine that a restaurant wouldn't have someone in charge.

    jen

  • I don't think you were wrong at all!  She on the other hand..

    a) if you're late, apologize, but don't make excuses

    b) never ever blame someone else - even when it was a kitchen error, I never told the customer that!

    c) there's always a manager on duty or SOMEONE who can fix the bill.

    d) you totally shouldn't have had to pay for the kids meal - honestly she should have been proactive and offered to take it off the bill, IMO

I have a high threshold when I can tell a server is just having a bad day (having been there myself), but this clearly went beyond that.   And she didn't even apologize!  Just blamed other people and tried to guilt trip you!  I wouldn't have tipped her either.

  • I wouldn't have lasted as long as you did. I'd definitely call and talk to the manager/owner. She would not have received a tip from me either.
