Slightly Annoyed - Story from Yesterday

I met my mom and her husband at Wrentham yesterday with the kids.  Knowing that it was cold and Wrentham can means lots of walking, I took the double stroller.  Ours isn't a double wide, just wicked long.  When people are nice to me I joke and call it "the world's biggest stroller", even though it's not wide - like I said, just long (Pam - insert joke here).  Anyways, I go to Friendly's, where we've been TONS of times and someone who I'm assuming is the manager comes up and asks me to leave my stroller outside.  I was a little taken aback because I've never had that issue before.  So I said really?  Because there were two other strollers there and I was more than happy to fold mine up - only I didn't get to tell him that because he said, "Yes, please - we own the side of the building."  And I said, "Well, what about my bags?"  I had a bunch of shopping bags in the stroller, and he said, well, you can definitely take those with you to the booth (which sorry, there just wouldn't be enough room.)  So I said, "No, that's OK, we'll just go somewhere else."  And he looked taken aback and said, "No, really, just leave the stroller outside."  And I said, "No, I'm afraid that someone's going to take it."  And he seemed to then think that I was nuts and replied, "No one's going to take it, we own the side of the building."  So I said again, and I was nice about this, I promise, "No, I really don't trust that.  We'll just go somewhere else.  It's fine."  But the more I think about this, the more annoyed I am.  It's not like I was being asked to leave it out in a the lobby, where it's still inside the building.  Do you guys leave your stroller outside?  Am I just wicked paranoid.  We ended up going to Ruby Tuesday's and they didn't say a word.

P.S. As I was leaving the building I heard the manager say to another customer, "I don't know what the problem was, we own the side of the building."  To which the customer said, "Do you want me to leave mine oustide?"  And he said, "If you don't mind."

Re: Slightly Annoyed - Story from Yesterday

  • Just because they own the side of the building does not guarantee that nothing is going to happen to your belongings.  I don't know why that argument was going to convince you otherwise.  I mean, hell, I own my house, doesn't mean no one will ever break in and rob me.

I do leave our stroller outside a lot but ours is a double wide.  I like girth...not length.  THERE'S YOUR JOKE!

But I really do leave it out a lot.  I have been told before that strollers in a restaurant can be a fire hazard, depending on where they are.

  • WTF? Does the fact that they own the side of the building cast magical mystical powers on said side of building that prevents people from taking things that may be  left there?

Honestly I would have been annoyed and probably would have left. The only way I would leave my stroller would be if they had a specific area designated for strollers or bikes that I could see from my booth. And even then, I don't know that I would do it. Like you said, it would be different if there were an indoor lobby area or something, but outside? I dunno. I would feel the same as you.

  • We go there all the time and that Friendly's has never allowed strollers inside.  They always have you leave them outside and often have the area separated by a rope or something and designated for strollers.  It is so small in the restaurant, there would be no way for someone to walk down the aisle with food and the stroller in there (single or double).  I know I hate to leave it outside too, but if you go to an amusement park or zoo, there are often times you have to leave your stroller in designated spot too. I am actually surpised Ruby Tuesday's let you bring it in to the table too.  Restaurants, for the most part, aren't even allowed to put a high chair at the end of a table because it acts as an obstruction, never mind a stroller.

If you are going again, maybe bring a cheap umbrella stroller that you don't worry about or park your car on that side of the outlets (there is a parking lot right there) so you can put the stroller away while you eat and then go back to retrieve it.

Thanks for this!  I wasn't looking to bring it to the table at all.  That place is way too small for that!  But everyone else had left theirs in the waiting area, and I was about to fold mine up like everyone else.  I guess I just thought it was weird.

  • I just want you to know, that I don't think you were being ridiculous at all about it.  I hate worrying about stuff outside.  They would be better off just making a larger lobby where you could fold up the stroller like you wanted to. I can never get over how tiny that place is for such a large outlet.
  • this happened to us too a few weeks ago. We were really annoyed and made that clear & the snow was everywhere so we put our snap frame in the entry. they were pissed, but we said it stays or we're going to tuesdays

I was especially peeved when another family came in with a monster of a stroller that no one made a peep about.

I will not be eating there again when we go to wrentham

**we made a huge stink about it and then were seated blocking the entire walkway b/c we had the carseat and I wasn't making my 5w old sit in a highchair -- they weren't happy about that either

  • I would absolutely not leave my stroller outside out of my vision. Case closed.

  • i actually refuse to eat at that friendlys when i have my kids for that reason... its totally insane.  the place across the way is a little more tolerant so long as they aren't busy.

    food court for us!

  • they asked me to do the same with mine and I didn't, I folded it up and put it under our booth.
