Where are all of my fellow commuters?

Hello, I am just curious to talk with other people who drive a long way to get to work.  Do you have any fun tips about keeping it "not so monotonous".  I drive 50 miles both ways 5 days a week...starting to feel a little lonely because everyone I work with lives about 5 minutes away haha!  Thanks everyone.

Re: Where are all of my fellow commuters?

  • My suggestion is to listen to audiobooks!  For me, I find that it's a good use of time since I rarely have the desire to sit and read books in my free time.  I would rather listen to a good book than listen to the talk that is on morning radio.  I get mine from the local library, which has a great selection!

  • I have a 45-minute commute.  I listen to NPR both ways.
  • When I drive to a client who's 65 miles away, I listen to NPR.

  • for 6 years I had a long commute, it was really 50+ miles both ways combined but that could take anywhere from an hour to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. (once there was a deadly accident and I was locked on freeway for 12 hours, haha memories!)

Anyway, in the mornings, I listened to news and then to a talk show I liked. If that got boring, I had audio books that I downloaded online and had handy that kept me entertained. On the way back, depending on how my day was, I'd listen to music, news, audiobooks.

Ok this mind sound stupid, but if I had a presentation or talk, I'd practice outloud while driving also.

  • My commute is 45 minutes each way, 4 days/wk. I usually carpool, but on the off days I plug in my ipod and sing aloud. I've also been recommended iMINDS which are these 8 minute long crash-courses on a huge variety of topics. My nerdly side can't wait to check it out.
  • When I had that commute (for 4.5 years) I would listen to an alphabet soup of radio on the way in (BBC, NPR, and ESPN). On the way home I'd call my mom.

  • Door to door my commute is about 90 minutes. A little more than half is on a train, 15-20 minutes walking, 15-20 driving from the train station. I listen to my ipod while I'm walking, read my nook on the train (or audio book if you're driving). I commute with DH so we chat on the drive from the train.

When we drove every day (2 hour each way), we listened to NPR. I would have preferred to get Sirius or audiobooks, but we'd never agree on what to listen to. So NPR it was.

  • When I had a commute like that, I got satellite radio and made sure I had a drink with me (tea on way there, soda on the way home).  Sometimes I even changed into comfy clothes before heading home.  I hated commuting that far (60 miles each way).
  • I also agree with the audio books idea.  You'd be amazed at how quick the drive goes when you're excited by the plot.  I've sat in my garage for 5 minutes to get to a point where I can walk away.
  • I used to have an hour commute driving.  I would listen to the radio, plug in my iPod, or call someone.  The rotation helped me with boredom.

  • When I commuted, I'd call a friend or listen to the radio. Hit the random button on your stereo to keep things interesting lol

    I've done this too!

The only reason I miss my commute is because of the audio books.  I loved listening to them on my commute!

  • I drive 47 miles each way and couldn't do it without my Sirius/XM radio.
  • Podcasts!  Mind you, I'm on a train for an hour each way - so I don't have to focus on driving - but I love my podcasts!  There are some radio personalities that I just love to listen to.  My DH makes fun of me, because they talk so much about their lives, that I feel like I know them.

  • I drive about 45 mins each way.  We got Sirius radio and that has made a huge difference in my commute.  I'll crank it up and sing along the entire way in.

In the afternoons, I either listen to the radio or my iPod or talk to my BFF on the phone.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

This for my 35 mile/50-60 minute commute. + XM radio...totally worth the cost.

  • Thanks everyone!!  I'm def. going to check into Sirius radio and get some audiobooks.
