Our local 10k is one of the top-ranked 10k's in the nation as a "must run" (it's just really fun... you run through the historic district with bands playing and people in costume etc). Let me just say that I have never run 6 (.2) miles straight in my life, and I had a really bad experience on the high school track team with a bad coach and constant injuries. Also had some set-backs with training. So here I am, 30 years old, and I don't feel like a "runner" and I am so nervous! Ha!
It went REALLY well though. Dh's brother is a personal trainer, and he ran it with me (his dad also ran but he is very fast and stayed ahead). I was able run the entire race except just half a mile of walking!!! Finished in 74 minutes! (Averaging 11.5 minute miles, with the last mile a 9-minute mile). And it felt SO GOOD! Even bil was impressed with my cardio... we were able to chat through the entire race.
My twin sister was one of the top runners in the state in high school, and I never got to have that experience - never even completed a race in high school due to injuries. I finally feel like we're "twins" again in that respect lol... she wanted to run but couldn't because her husband was out of town and no one to take the kids, etc
Okay, sorry to ramble on. I just feel like I've accomplished something I never would accomplish.
Re: Completed the 10k!!
That is so exciting! Congrats on finishing your first 10k! It sounds like you had a really great race! I'm impressed that you were able to do the last mile so much faster than the others, that's awesome!
Are you going to sign up for more?
Wow Zara congratulations!! That's wonderful! Doesn't it feel great to accomplish such a difficult goal? That's cool that you were able to run with your BIL and hold a conversation.
I joke and say I only run if someone's chasing me
) Actually I'm like you - too many injuries to my knees & ankles (I'm soooo clumsy!) I do like to speed-walk. I'm looking forward to getting into it again.
raangoli - thank you! There's already talk about another race in August (with Dh potentially running one), but secretly, I am wondering if/when I get pregnant and how that will affect things. And yeah, regarding the last mile... we really had no idea how I would fare for the last half of the race, so we were not pushing really hard for fear I would hit a wall and need to be dragged across the finish line lol. Around mile 4, we realized I felt totally fine and we decided to kill the last mile. I've been told that ideally, your last mile should not be your fastest as that is a sign you didn't push yourself hard enough but for a first race, I was soooooo happy that I got through 6.2 miles with so much energy to spare!!
Jmkes... seriously, the leg injuries are rough. My sister is also prone to them! Seems our legs and feet give out long before our cardio haha. My BIL had to correct my form during training because I was totally killing my left shin. I don't think I'll ever run a marathon as that could be crippling lol.
that's such a great accomplishment!!! congrats! I wish I could walk just 1 mile LOL
how did I not know you were a twin btw?
Books read in 2012: 21/50
Thanks, everyone, I do feel amazing!
Cheering all of you on too with your health-related goals as I know many of us have them.
Manda - I don't know if I've mentioned being a twin much, but yes, identical! This is one of my favorite twin pics from the wedding.
