one more then i'll stop: what do you collect on vacations?

the travel board is inspiring to me today apparently...

what do you collect as a souvenir when you go on vacation?

we get 2 things:

1. a magnet of the city we're in

2. a cross/crucifix but only if it is a) hand/locally made and b) in a style representative of the country's artisans. i.e. i never bought one in ireland because everything i found was either $100+ or plastic. bums me out that i've been there twice and don't have a cross from there.

also, the fact that i collect crosses is completely bizarre because i'm agnostic but i think they're beautiful.

  • Christmas Ornaments
  • We always get some little trinket toy that you would get at a tourist shop...they usually say the name of the place on them (key chains, snow globes, and little statutes are common).  They have to be small enough for me to wrap my hand around.  We have a little box that we keep all of them in, along with a map of the place.
  • We collect mugs and shot glasses. Like when we went to Hawaii, we got a Hawaii mug and shot glasses from the Dole Pineapple plantation, Pearl Harbor, etc.

  • I collect shot glasses. Easy to find and you can get them pretty cheap.

  • When I was younger I collected postcards (cheap and easy to find).

Now I try to get a Christmas ornament. Dh and I usually pick up some sort of shot glass or mug on our trips too.

  • Nothing! I hate souvenirs and knick knacks. So not my style. Pictures, I guess :)

Though I do want to do a layered sand jar from beach vacations.

  • We just started collecting religious statues to represent the dominant religion in the country where we've traveled.  We're hoping that the figurines will all get along on the shelves of our bookcases.  So far, we've got Buddah and Ganesh.
  • I try to get a book with pictures or postcards.  I always buy my sister a tacky souvenir, like a snow globe, or the pens that have things that move in them.

It is fun to decorate the tree and have your travel memories too Cool

  • I take a picture of DH and my feet in a recognizable spot somewhere - like on the beach, on the boardwalk, cobblestone street, deck...  Both our feet in the same fram matching each other.  I print them in 4x6 and write the date and location on the front in black marker and put them in a simple wite frame.  I have a travel wall and they all hang randomly on the wall.  I can change them out for new ones and take other ones down.

I get a charm from the Harley dealer for a charm bracelet.

DH gets a t-shirt.  We have a box of old tshirts from him and I from various places.  One of these days I'm going to have a couple of quilts made with the t-shirts.

  • Something 'made.' A wood carving, a local photograph, something made by an artist.

Joe usually gets a hat or a tshirt of some sort too.

  • Coins.  I am not a collector.  When I was young I was envious of my friends' collections so I tried numerous times to start collections.  No go.  I can't stand the clutter.

This is totally flammable since a few people have said they collect them, but I hate when adults collect shot glasses.  I feel like if you are out of college, it's kind of tacky.  Even in college it's kind of horrible.  That being said, some of my best friends collect them and I still adore them as people so clearly you can have tacky collections and still be cool.

  • Just photos :)  And I'll pick up whatever piece of art catches my fancy, but I don't collect anything in particular.  I have paintings from Costa Rica, Australia, China and Taiwan, a tapestry from Belize, some figurines from Mexico, etc. etc. We'll also sometimes bring back food items (e.g. coffee from Costa Rica, wine from Australia, etc.)

The idea of actually trying to collect something specific makes me hyperventilate!  I wouldn't want that kind of pressure :)

  • I try to pick up a Christmas ornament, but if there isn't anything remotely tasteful or unique, or if it is a non-Christian country it can be a challenge and I don't stress over it.

I also have a bad habit of getting very breakable things - blown/cut glass vases, plates, bowls, wine-glasses, pottery. . . not really the best thing to collect when you are traveling, but so far nothing has broken and I have beautiful display pieces from almost every country I've visited!

  • Jumping on this bandwagon :-) We also do holiday ornaments and we write the year on it somewhere small in black marker (the back/bottom).
  • Magnets for the fridge and artwork - something like the size of a 8x10 or smaller book. I have quite a few small paintings from local artists where we vacationed. I still have no idea what I'm going to do with them or where to put them all. Oh, well.

  • Sometimes I'll get a t-shirt if I can find one I like. What I would really like to do is have a travel wall somewhere in our house and blow up pics of the different places we've visited.

  • We get something handmade to decorate our home with. In Honduras we got a handmade Lencan vase, in Paris we got three paintings by an artist in Montmarte etc.

  • I'm not a fan of clutter so just memories and photos.

On our first trip to Mexico, I really wanted to buy a glass pitcher with the different colors painted onto it.  I was stressed out the whole trip looking for the "perfect" one.  I can't imagine having to spend every vacation looking for a certain object....I would go nuts!

  • Lol.  I did this exact thinbg in Mexico on our honeymoon, only with a glass bowl.  In the end I decided I didn't want to deal with customs if my bags were checked, so I passed after most of the week.

I used to dol snow globes when I was litte (12-15ish) then I switched to the mini snowglobes when I got to high school, then gave up on them when I got out of college because it was getting ridiculous, esp on top of globes I got as gifts.

I switched to charms for a charm bracelet I have, but they got too hard to find.

Now I do scrapbooks of all my trips and I think I'm stealing the idea of feet photos for all my future travels. I think I can get away with the oic of our sandals from our honeymoon, so I'll do that for all my post-wedding travels. Thanks!
