Laundry splotches
I have a laundry related question. For basically my entire adult laundry life, I get what appears to be some form of bleach/faded spots on certain articles of laundry items. It's mostly towels, sheets and t-shirts. I don't use bleach in the wash so that's not the issue.
It wasn't a big deal in college because all my stuff was cheap-o but the faded/bleach spots have appeared on some really nice sheet sets and our new towels that we've purchased so I don't think ignoring the splotches is an option anymore.
Any clues what's going on and any suggestions to fix it?

Do you use fabric softener? Liquid or powder detergent?
Has it been the same washer this whole time? I would use this as an excuse to get a new one

I don't use fabric softener but I use liquid detergent. Maybe swapping to powder would help?
And I would love a new washer/dryer. Ours are second hand from Craigslist and H and I constantly stand in front of the HE models in Home Depot and lust.

The splotches are all over. Sometimes they're splotches, other times, streaks. Our gray sheets have some random peachy colored streaks. Our green towels have light green splotches all over. None of the faded spots are concentrated in any area of any item really.
At first I thought it could be my clinique acne face washes that I use every day. But it doesn't show up on all the towels or sheets and they're on my husband's t-shirts as well. It never shows up on heavyweight clothing or jeans which confuses me.
As far as the water, I think our water is fairly normal. Whenever I drink straight from the tap I never notice any unusual taste.

Agreed.. Although when my apartment in college had nearly new units, I still got splotches.
And my dry cleaner ruined my favorite dress today so it seems I can't escape things getting ruined.

have you always used the same detergent? do you know anyone else that has the same problem?
for now i'd try putting the detergent in before the clothes and let the water mix with it a bit before adding clothing into the drum of the washer. when i used to add the detergent onto the clothing i'd get some discolored spots from time to time on my laundry.

I go back and forth between different detergents and from the friends I've asked, I'm apparently the only one plagued by splotches.
I'll try putting the detergent in first. Now I put the clothes in and once it's nearly full with water I'll add the soap.
